yoga taken from the sanskrit work for “listenâ€was a group of physical, mental, and spiritual disciplines that informed the way it’s adherentslived their lives. many christians have problems with yoga asit’s practice is strongly connected with hinduism. david gordon white, a professor at uc santabarbara states that from the 5th century onward, yoga was seen as a path to salvation- a wayto obtain omniscience and an enlightened consciousness. yoga was also a technique used for enteringinto other bodies or generating multiple bodies and the obtainment of other super naturalaccomplishments. these types of things definitely seem to beout of line with christian teaching and thinking.
as christians, we understand that there isonly one pathway to salvation and that salvation is not something that we can work our waytowards. no matter how hard we try to empty our mindsand lives of sin and it’s influence, we are unable to do so. you see, we understand that anything shortof the sacrifice of christ is powerless to deliver us from the entanglements of life. but does this actually mean that christian’sshouldn’t do yoga? if you view yoga in the way i just described,i would personally say that this type of yoga isn’t in line with biblical principles andas such a very dangerous practice.
i would strongly caution you against participatingin this type of spiritual practice as i believe it is in direct contradiction with the teachingsof jesus. yoga on this definition is a dangerous spiritualpractice and one that i don’t think any serious christian ought to participate in. however, while that is true, i do also believethere is another way to define yoga. i believe there is a way to understand andpractice yoga in a way that is deeply god honoring. now before you stone me, just hear my out. many would argue in favor of yoga from a physicalpractice perspective.
many would cite their personal experiencewith how practicing yoga has helped them overcome physical ailments, stress and insecurity aswell as chronic pains. just recently i saw pretty amazing post wherean elderly woman who had suffered from scoliosis for decades. she was perpetually hunched over in constantpain. however, through some yoga therapy, she wasable to slowly correct her posture and release a significant portion of the pain that shenormally experienced. on my view, this second definition of yogais one that hones in on the physical aspects of yoga while completely rejecting the spiritualand metaphysical implications.
some of you might question, is this somethingthat is actually possible? i definitely think so! many people don’t realize that many of thestretches that they do before gym class or before going on a run could actually be consideredyoga poses. for example, the common “butterfly†stretchstrikes a strong resemblance to the “baddha konasana†or ‘bound angle†pose. the basic plank is actually part of the “chaturangaâ€pose, while the back bend in gymnastics could be called the “urdhva dhanurasana.†-struggles with pronunciation-
that things. many common physical stretches like bendingover to touch your toes, stretching your arms into the sky and even lying down on the groundmotionless could be considered yoga poses. obviously there is nothing wrong with doingthese poses. in fact, like i mentioned before, many wouldargue there is actually a positive benefit. a little over a year ago i tweaked my lowerback while at the gym and had a considerable amount of pain for several months. this last summer, i’ve put a considerableamount of time focusing on stretching out certain parts of my body to help alleviatesome of the pressure.
you can call this stretching or you couldcall it yoga. whatever it was, actually did help my back. perhaps you feel uncomfortable with callingstretching, “yoga.†i get it, it’s a little weird a little different. but from what i can understand, there’snothing wrong with doing yoga if yoga is simply going through a guided stretching course. again, it depends completely upon how youdefine yoga, and what that “yoga practice†actually looks like. but what about you?
