"it is only fitting, then, that i should pledge to them "and to you "that i will be the presidentof all the people." tonight, we will recognizepresident gerald r. ford for his accomplishments, his character, candor, andintegrity. we wish to honor gerald ford'slegacy of leadership to the world, to the nation, and to west michigan.
we wish to applaudgerald r. ford's commitment and unwavering supportgrand rapids community college by bestowing, posthumously, the college'spresidential medallion, an honor sharedwith grcc presidents that has only been awardedoutside the campus community once before. accepting the medallion onpresident ford's behalf will be his daughter, susan ford bales.
along with her mother, susan ford bales helped launch national breastcancer awareness month in 1984 and has served asa national spokeswoman for breast cancerawareness. as a spouse of abreast cancer survivor, i cannot begin to tellyou how much of an impact these effortshave made. susan has servedas a trustee of the gerald r. fordpresidential foundation

during his time as presidentof the united states, helping the nation heal afterthe presidential transition, easing cold wartensions, confronting disputes in themiddle east and southeast asia, while dealing witheconomic challenges at home. anyone familiar withmichigan history is aware ofgerald ford's role as an evolving leader andadvocate for the region, from his time at grand rapidssouth high school,
to the universityof michigan, his naval serviceduring world war ii, and his election as ourrepresentative to congress where he servedfor 25 years. today, our community'sinfrastructure reflects the honor wefeel for this native son. from schoolsto our airport to the highway that windsthrough west michigan, the very highway that wrapsaround his presidential museum.
grcc's personal connectionwith gerald ford extends back to histime as a congressman, when he hosted our studentsin washington, dc, in 1959... and, just a fewyears later, delivered thecommencement address here on our campus. the strength ofthat bond only grew and, in the fall of 1976,resulted in the dedication of the gerald r. fordfieldhouse.

i assure you, graduates,no one-- absolutely no one-- expects you to remember anythingthat is said this evening. and most definitely, myremarks are no exception. thank you, president ender, to grand rapidscommunity college for this extraordinary honorthat you have given my dad. dad was the collegecommencement speaker in 1963. he was a huge supporterof the college, as grand rapids'congressman,
as president, and in the decades afterin the white house. he would havebeen thrilled to be a part of this100th anniversary. i know how proud and gratefuldad would have been to be honored by a collegethat meant so much to him, particularly this one in hishometown of grand rapids. so, on behalf of dad,i thank you for this honor, and most of all, i thankyou for allowing dad and me
to become a part of thisremarkable institution. america has had 43 men whohave served 44 presidencies. grover cleveland wasthe comeback kid. every presidency hasits highs and lows, and some presidentshave suffered in the gazeof history. others, like dadand harry truman, have benefited fromthe longer perspective. in my dad's case, historyhas been very kind.
as david broder observed,"in an odd and inexplicable way, "the truth has begun to dawnon the american people "that gerald ford wasthe kind of president "americans always wanted anddidn't know that they had," end quote. and you can draw a straightline to a single place, to a single community, to understandour 38th president and his special placein the nation's history.
george w. bush spoke forall americans when he said, "our countryseems blessed "to find the right leaderat the right time. "through thatspecial providence, "the times foundgerald ford. "and when he elevatedto the presidency, "it was becauseamerica needed him, "not because heneeded the office. "he assumed the presidency whenthe nation needed a leader
"of integrityand humility, "and we found it in theman from grand rapids," every day of that 895 daysof his presidency, dad relied upon the lessonshe learned in this community. and this evening, i wouldlike to share one example of how grand rapidsmade him into the man, and how grand rapidswas the core of what he was asthe president. some of you mayknow that dad
was one of the strongestpresidents for civil rights and equal rights. and for example, we allwitnessed wonderful progress in women's athletics, brought about by title ix. title ix, ladies and gentlemen, was issued by my dad. he was--(applause) he was the first president toappoint women to annapolis and west point, and he made certain to havediversity in his administration,
particularly foramericans of color. of course, to thepeople of grand rapids, his commitment to all americans, whatever their race, whatever theirnational origin, and whatever theirplace in life, was no surprise. and as some of you may know, mydad was an all-american center on the national champion teamof the university of michigan. and in their1934 season,
the wolverines were scheduledto play georgia tech. however, georgia techrefused to take the field unless michigan benched theirstar halfback, willis ward. now, there are several thingsabout the georgia tech demand that affectedmy dad. willis ward wasa star player. willis ward was thefastest guy on the team. willis ward was dad'sclose friend on the team, and oh, yes, willis ward was black.
the georgia techdemand was simple. "we will not cometo ann arbor "unless the black playeris kept off the field." unfortunately, and in what wascertainly not the greatest hour, michigan agreed, and dad's friend, willis ward, was benched. but the storydidn't end there. dad did something thatalso was unthinkable, particularlyfor the captain
of the university ofmichigan football team. dad decided, since hisfriend was being benched solely because ofthe color of his skin, dad would respond, and he did, and he quitthe team. but latethat night, willis ward cameto my dad's room, and the two friendsspoke for a long time. and willistold my dad,
(crying)he knew what wasin my dad's heart. and he begged mydad to reconsider, not just for willis, but for their team. so, finally, after thatvery personal, special time, my dad stayedon the team. and that saturday, he ledthe team onto the field at the big house and michigan wonthe game, 9-0. ladies and gentlemen, that lesson of equality
is one that gerald fordfirst learned here in grand rapids, and it is a lesson of equalitygerald ford carried with him for the restof his life. so, in the twilightof his life, my dad remarked, "wheni wake up at night, "and i can't sleep,i think of grand rapids." so, to receive the honorfor dad at this college and in this city thathe loved so very much,
means more than words ofthanks i could possibly muster. on behalf of the 38th presidentof the united states, thank you, from the bottomof my heart, for this honor. may god bless and watchover the class of 2015, and grand rapidscommunity college, and god blessamerica. >> at this time, the grccconcert choir will present "the music of living"by dan forrest. the concert choir isunder the direction

our commencementspeaker tonight can certainly speak tothe "community" part bert bleke started his careeras a teacher and administrator in the east grand rapids andforest hills school districts before becomingsuperintendent of lowell, and then, grand rapidspublic schools. after retiring, heturned his attention from k-12 studentsto colleges, and was elected to ourboard of trustees in 2011.
it is my great pleasure tointroduce keynote speaker and board of trusteeschairperson, bert bleke. >> well, for those folks who areexpecting president obama, i'm not him.(audience laughing) and then, if thatisn't bad enough, president ford isrepresented here. and then, president ford'sdaughter said, i think quiteeloquently, that nobody isgoing to remember
a thing that issaid here tonight. (audience laughing) i don't know whati'm doing here! it kinda reminds me of astory that abraham lincoln used to tell, about the man who was aboutto be tarred and feathered. so, they gotthe tar out. and they said, "listen, do youwant to have any final words "before we tarand feather you?"
and the guy thought for afew minutes and he said, "you know, if it wasn't for thehonor of this whole thing, "i would rather besomeplace else." and that's exactlyhow i feel. (audience chuckling) so, you know, 100 yearsis an awful long time. you can tell. dr. ender is noteven 100 years old. but i think we forgetanother anniversary
that is taking place, actually two weeks ago,but 150 years ago. 150 years ago,on april 15th, abraham lincoln was actuallyassassinated on the 14th and died onthe 15th. so, this is really an importantanniversary for all of us. i think that when we reflecton the responsibilities of presidents, and the impact that presidentsmake on all of our lives,
as witnessed againthis evening, president lincoln changedall of our lives forever, and yet, i think it'simportant to mention, on that anniversaryof 150 years, that, as evidenced by manythings that we're seeing in so many of ourcities today, that that workis not done, and that all of us,as a community, and includinggrand rapids,
have a responsibility tomake this a better world for everybody. and i think it's particularly aresponsibility of our youngsters who are graduatingthis evening. we all can makea difference. and we all can't be presidentsof the united states, but every one ofus in this room can make a difference andmake this a better place for everybody inour community.
and really, that'skind of our job. i'm now at the pointof my speech, where... (scattered applause) i'm supposed togive you advice. but i haveno advice. and i knowit's 8:12, and you're not going toremember a thing i say anyhow. but i do haveone observation. this observation is notbased on scientific research.
it's based onme observing. and the observation is simple, and i think it's very true. here it is... "life is not fair." now, here's theinteresting part. i think the livingexample of that... sits in ourgraduating class. because in sitting withour graduating class are all differentkinds of stories.
and everybodyhas a story. and many, many graduateswho are here this evening have come through very, very difficult times. so, you really have to aska very simple question. how did youget here? why are yousitting here? and many of your friends, who started with you, are no longer here? why are you here?
and other peoplehave dropped out? viktor frankl, who was incarcerated ina concentration camp during world war ii,wrote a book. it's a very skinny book--it's about 90 pages. i'd recommend thateverybody reads that. the name of the book is"man's search for meaning." and in that book, he lays outa very simple equation. and that is that we cannot,as man and women,
we cannot controlall the time, and we cannot control many ofthe time what happens to us. but we can control how wereact to what happens to us. and that, i would think, is theone thing you should remember. your attitude... makes all the differencein the world. so, many things happento us every day, which we haveno control over. but we can control our attitude,so we live inside our heads.
we have the ability, the freedom to choose. and i think that many ofyou who have graduated, are sitting here, sayingto yourself right now, "you know, i donepretty good." and you have. because you already know thatone of the great secrets is not what happens, but how you handle it,and how you react to that. so, you willremember that.
there will bea test tomorrow-- (audience laughing)oh, tomorrow's saturday. probably not. so, that'sall i know. i would like to take onesecond to thank the faculty. the heart of any educationalsystem is teaching. and teaching is both ascience, but also an art. it's a humanendeavor. and i heard so many storiesover the past several months
of how many graduates havebeen impacted by teachers here at this school, going over and above boardto help young people be successful. and i want to thank everysingle faculty member here, personally--(applause) for doing awonderful job. it's all about thehuman experience. and also, many other employeesof this system who work hard
to make sure thateverything works. the board of trustees are deeplygrateful for your contributions, also, andvery thankful. and to you whoare graduating, i suggest you havefun, work hard, make mistakes, and remember mylittle speech. (audience laughing)(applause) >> thank you, chairperson bleke.
