all right, that closedalpha-- that time when players around the worldare going to get a chance to get their tasteof the thousand year war between knights,vikings, and samurai-- is starting on september15th, and to talk about some of the warriors andmaps that you'll be able to play asand experience in that closed alpha-- please joinme in welcoming to the stage, from ubisoftmontreal, jeff spicer.


[applause] what's up, guys? how are you doing? jeff, welcome to the stage. we are going to talking"for honor," obviously. the branding is everywhere. and we're going to getinto the different factions and highlight some of thedifferent warriors people can play as, but just give usa quick overview of, you know,


the process of creatingthese warriors-- how they come together right on. well, so our team hada vision of making a world where we notonly took the history and the lore of the vikings, andthe knights, and the samurais, but we also wanted totake it a step further. so there's unique heroeswithin these factions. not only do the heroesbelong to factions,


though, they also tend to leantowards a play style-- which allows you to leveragecertain situations and opportunitiesduring the battle to really make a difference. but beyond that, the keypoint is that every hero is unique in their own way. no two heroes share weapons,animations, or movie sets. what this meansis that every hero provides its own challenges andadventure within the fast paced


and brutal world of "forhonor," allowing you endless hours of entertainmentand awesome fighting. and we've got a bunch ofheroes on the full roster of "for honor." 12, to be exact? yes, sir. and we are going to be takinga look at sort of spotlighting three of them today. we're going to start off with aspotlight video for the warden


knight. [video playback] [clanging] the wardens. members of an ancientorder fallen into dust. sworn to defend the weak. masters of the long sword. their origins lost to history. still, they fightfor what is right.


driven by duty, devotedto their people. but only a few mayjoin their order. [end playback] woo! that's a pretty good one, right? so, you know, there's a lot of--there's four playable knights, but the warden really hasthat kind of classic knight feel to me. i mean, with the fullarmor, with that broadsword.


talk to us a little bitabout how the warden handles in the field. well the warden isone of our heroes that falls into the vanguardplay style, which means they're a pretty good all rounder. so as you mentioned, he'sgot the typical knight armor but also the long sword. the long sword is keyfor this character. it is unique tothe warden, and it


is the essentialutilitarian weapon. it's not only a broadsword--it's super heavy, very sharp-- but it also acts as yourform of defense, right? so pairing thiswith the armor makes the warden a typical,strong defensive player. but in the right hands, theycan really make offensive blows to change a battle. that was a prettyaggressive move in that video we just watched where he, like,grabbed the sword by the blade


and clubbed someonewith the hilt? the hilt itself can be a weapon,and we take a lot of pride in the executionsthat are available and they're variedthroughout the game. but yeah, it does bringa lot to the battle. a lot of character there in thewarden knight, and let's move on to another character now. we're going to see someother factions represented because i know there are somevikings in the crowd here.


let's take a look at theraider spotlight video. sometimes, a viking is bornwho carries the spark of gods. raiders, we call them. it is a name thatcan summon armies. ruthless, fearless,made for battle. the dane axe was the mightiestweapon of our ancestors. they wield it without mercy. the moment of a viking'sdeath is chosen by fate. so what use have they of armor?


[explosion] or of fear? we got some hollersfor the viking here in the paxarena crowd for sure. bit of a differentapproach there. the viking, not somuch with the armor or the fear of anythingon the entire earth. no, that prettymuch sums that up. whether it's pure rage oran absolute unabridged fear,


we'll leave it up to you guys. but it very much comesthrough in the way you play this character, right? one of the firstthings you'll notice is the weapon and theapproach to gameplay. the raider is essentially anall out offensive character. he's not too concernedabout defense. he's got high damagethat he can deal. he works in stuns.


his attacks areoften unblockable. it doesn't matterif you land a blow, he's going to follow throughand he's going to do his damage. and something i'mhoping we'll see later during our best of fivematch, this move where he, like, picks the enemyup over his shoulder and slams him on the ground. yeah, that's true. so the raider has two differenttypes of what we call throws.


the first is froma sprint, where you can charge an enemy take himon your shoulder and carry him up to 10 meters-- choosing whereand when you want to place him. this allows you tothrow them off an edge, or put them up against anobstacle, knee him in the head, and stun him, givingyou the advantage to land a couple more blowsand make the difference. i have a feelingour next hero is going to be a littlemore tempered, perhaps,


shall we say? let's take a look at thehighlight video for the kensei from the samurai faction. every army needs warriorswhose specialty is victory. kensei, sword saints, theguardians of our people. every great rulersince the fall has trained as a sword saint-- everyone-- and they are formidable. the nodachi was long thoughtto be too large for use in real war.


they proved them wrong. their armor is thestrongest of our people. as is their will. i can't decide what myfavorite part of the kensei is, but i think it'sgot to be that mask. oh, it's so fierce. there's a lot of coolparts to the kensei and the samurais in general. one of the thingsyou'll have noticed


is at the verybeginning of that video was the shape ofthe logo in general. we've gone from the structuredfeeling of the knights to the raw, unbridledpassion of the vikings. and here, we havethe samurais where it's very much about flowand mastery of the art. you can see thatwith the weapons they use, with the waythey depict themselves. they're very muchabout mastering


a weapon and their movement. there's a lot offinesse that goes into playing these characters--a lot of strong chains-- and it very much is avariation between all three of the vanguard characters. that nodachiblade-- every time i look at it, i kind of--like they said in the video, could it really be that long? does that really work?


well it does work inthe correct situations, and that's where itgets interesting. with a weapon thatsize, you can definitely pose a threat to yourfriendlies but you also have to be awareof the environment. if you're in a smallhallway and your hands are at the end ofthe hilt, you're not going to be able toland blows on the sides. so you really haveto take advantage


of your range andthe environment to really make adifference in battle. all right, jeff. thanks for giving us a breakdownof the warden, the raider, and the kensei. we're going to get you backout here once the best of five action begins, but for now--ladies and gentlemen, round of applause forjeff spicer, please. thank you very much, guys.

oh. oh, great. hi, everyone. welcome, my friend. thanks. thanks, chris. it is good to be seen,and it's good to see you. absolutely, man. now, community developer.


let's talk a littlebit about what that means, what your roleis, on the "for honor" team. actually we are two communitydevelopers on the project. there's me and mr. pope, who isactually at ubisoft montreal. so our role isbasically to establish a dialogue between thecommunity and that dev team. so we sit with thedev team in montreal and we work on programsto engage our community and make sure they havean exciting journey


outside and inside the game. and one of those programsthat's really active already is theambassador program. absolutely. so with our ambassadorprogram, what we're trying to do is to spotsome of our good community contributors and make sure wehave a privileged relationship with them. so, for example, we invitethem to our closed alphas.


so so far, we've donea couple of those. we're doing the next one intwo weeks on september 15th, so make sure to tune in, guys,and register on our website. but yeah, so withthe ambassadors we are trying to spot somegood community contributors who whether work on fan sites,or work game guides, do cosplays, artworks,and stuff like that and make sure that we givethem some spotlight to shine. so you guys arealways on the lookout


for folks who are enthusedabout "for honor," who are sort of gettinginto it themselves through the some ofthose ways you mentioned. for folks who are now sort oftaking an interest in a game, what are good ways for themto get involved and connect with this ambassador program? for sure, if you go on theforums-- and the ubisoft forum, so forums.ubisoft.com--you can find "for honor" pretty quickly.


and on our forums, wehave a dedicated thread about the ambassador program. so you can go through it andsend us some mail or a message. otherwise, you can find us arepretty everywhere on twitter, reddit, facebook as well. all the social medias. we're everywhere. all right, now we'retalking about the community and sort of what they've beeninvolved with and creating.


now let's take a lookat some of that stuff because they've already--you guys have already gotten some cosplayers andsome artists getting into it. so with magic-- oh yeah. so yeah, we have-- we've invitedsome of our community members at different events. this one was at themontreal game summit. here, we had our communityreporters-- robin, brandon, and zach-- meeting with thedark lord, jason vandenberghe,


at e3. so they had the chance todo interviews with them. we had a lot of fun. we invited them to amedieval times in anaheim. that was an epic night, and,yeah, we had a lot of fun there. so this is part ofour community members that are good contributors,or good players, and we invited them at events.


so here was at gamescom whatour brand director, luke. we went to the marksburgcastle, a medieval castle from the 13thcentury in germany. that was pretty epic. chris: but was it coolerthan medieval times? emile: it was different. it was different. chris: very diplomatic. emile: yeah.


so we do master classes. this one was at gamescom,again, with some of our good contributorsand they had the chance to meet with someof our dev members, like damien here, which isour online game director. so this is a great artworkthat was made by one of our community artists. this is an amazingviking artwork. chris: yeah.


i mean, you sort of seethe helmet, like, image that you guys havebeen using a lot to sort of promote the game. but the warrioritself-- and here again, it's really kind ofevocative of the style that you guys are going for. emile: that's what'scool, is to see-- if we find some cool artistsaround the community-- that's cool to see their takeon our actual artworks


to see how they interprethow they envision the differentcharacters of the game. so that's cool thatthey use their own style to draw characters. chris: it's also cool todress up in knight armor. emile: yeah, absolutely. this guy is mark,and he's from poland, and he made-- hewas one of the first to do a cosplay of the warden.


so this is an amazingcosplay that he made a couple months ago. very cool. all right, so we got a glimpseof the sort of gamescom trips you guys tookand, of course, games in cologne, germany--no offense pax west, but, like, the biggest fangaming event in the world. they just-- they justhave a lot more space. but at that eventyou guys really


took advantageof, like, hey this is a chance toconnect with fans. and i understand you puttogether a little video to show us whatthat was all about? let's check it out. [yelling] open the gates! hello, everyone. this is spaceelephant.


i'm actually in germany with the"for honor" crew for gamescom. this week was a bigweek for the project because we announced all ofour warriors in the game, but also we announced the dateof our next closed alpha-- which is september 15th. so make sure to mark the date. but aside from themadness of the event, we decided to take our starplayers to the marksburg castle, which is anauthentic medieval castle


from the 13th century. so it was the best scenario toput us in the "for honor" mood for battle. what i liked most about "forhonor" was playing as a team, and how the game was reallycatered to encourage stuff. and just teaming up with myfriends and the other star players to just kick ass andexecute some samurai, really. are we allowed to say that? i'm sorry, it soundsreally bloody.


you hear everyone screamingin ear like, go to a. go, go, go to point a andyou're like, ok, ok. let me kill theseguys, and just run. but single player reallyfocused on the gameplay. like, ok, what ishe going to do? is he going to blockleft, right, up? and you're really morefocused with that. so both are really fun. this was the firsttime at gamescom


and it's been a longtime dream come true. meeting committee membersand events is extremely cool. i like being able to meetthem, talk with them. i want to be able to have thisinteraction, just the dialogue, and that's how we're goingto make the game better. always a pleasure. it was a pleasure at e3, itis a pleasure at gamescom, and it will be apleasure to meet you all in all the events we'regoing to do around the world.


i'm really excitedfor the community to actually get their handson some of the single player aspects as well becausethe multiplayer is great and we've seen gameplay on it. it is amazing, it looks amazing. i can't wait for themto actually try out the single player campaignand get a taste of the story. i am now in front ofthe "for honor" booth in the middle of theaction at gamescom.


so here we have 64 pods. so you can try thecampaign, you can also try to multiplayer, ofcourse, with new characters. another thing we're doinghere is master classes. so we are hosting a master classevery day at the ubisoft lounge with members of the dev team. i'm with bio jade, gamedesigner on "for honor," and damien, onlinegame director. so we just won two prizesat gamescom-- best pc


game and best ps4 game. guys, what does thisprize mean to you? it's amazing. can you imagine? we have the best pc gamehere in germany at gamescom. we couldn't have wanted more. guys, any final world forthe "for honor" community? please come inthe closed alpha. let's fight together sowe can make that game

quite a crew youguys got there. thank you very much. all right, ladiesand gentlemen. we've learned aboutsome of the warriors that you'll be able toplay as in "for honor." and we've heard fromthe community about how to get involved with the game. and now it's time for alittle less conversation, and a little more action.


please welcome back tothe stage, jeff spicer, as we kick off our best offive "for honor" showdown. it's about to get real up here. we're going to get ourtwitch streamers up here in just a second,but before we do that let's break downthe mode that we'll be playing today-- dominion. well before we get intodominion, "for honor" really brings a uniquemultiplayer melee combat


experience into yourhands, and we've developed many game modes inwhich you can ply, and hone, and master yourskills as a hero. but as you mentioned today,we're talking about dominion. dominion is our objectivebased game mode that focuses around three main points. but before you get into that,i believe you have something to transition to? yeah, let's check it out.


so we've got asort of video here to walk you folks through howdominion works, how these-- what kind of strategiesthese teams are going to want to employ. so let's get that up and going. and jeff will getus the rundown. dominion takes placeoutside of sanctuaries, and it has an attackerand a defender fantasy. the idea here revolvedaround a siege.


the attackers are tryingto breach the sanctuary of the defending forces. the game mode goesaround capturing three main zones, one ofwhich is the battle front, or the front that is wherethe soldiers of the attacking and defending team clash. zones are gained by killingany opposing enemies in them, and staying there longenough to capture them. once you capturea zone, staying on


it will boost it-- meaning thatyou will gain extra points that help your teamcontribute to pushing the other team intobreaking, and eventually winning the game. so here, you can see theimportance of high ground. being able to see what'sgoing on during the battle. it helps you communicatewith your team. as we mentioned before, thisis a four versus four objective based game mode.


what that means is you needto work with your three heroes on your team, andreally maximize your presence-- prioritizing threats and makinga difference to win the battle. the front is unique as acapture zone because essent-- [audio out] --not only do you haveto clear the enemies, you have to keepyour presence there to make sure yoursoldiers rush through to the furthest threshold.


your presence can intimidatethe enemy soldiers and activate yours, give them energy andreally help them push you. so a hero can reallymake a difference in the ebb andflow of the front. so that was anexample of a feat. those really allow you,with a single button input, to make a differencein the battle. so here we get intothe game rules a bit. so as you'll seein the score bars,


there's a thresholdof 1,000 points. getting 1,000 points meansyou with the other team into breaking. this is a unique aspectto our game mode, and what means is the enemyteam will no longer respawn and they're ontheir final lives. however, because zonesare always in play, if you regain a zone thatwas owned by the enemy, you can capturethose points back,


bring your team below the1,000 point threshold-- what we call rallying-- and allowyour friendlies to respawn and then go on the offensiveto capture the zones and put the otherteam into breaking. as you can see, it gets a littleunfair at the end of breaking. but that's the pointof supporting your team and using the battlefield. let's hope our streaming teamswere paying attention to that. some great information onstrategy about battlefield


knowledge, and that all--also important breaking phase at the end todetermine the victor. jeff, you ready to seesome "for honor" in action? i mean, i know you see it alot-- you're on the development team-- but let'sget these guys up here and let's and get into it. let's fight. ladies and gentlemen,we will now be introducing theteams facing off


in the "for honor"pax west gauntlet. first up, we'vegot team knights. please welcome to the stagecohhcarnage, gassy mexican, lolrenaynay, and tangent gaming. that is team knight. facing off againstteam knight will be team samurai, featuringcobalt streak, annemunition, manvsgame, andfairlight excalibur. all right, folks.


now that you seethat teams arrayed, i want to get a sense for wherethe crowd's loyalty lies-- both here and online. so let's hear bigshout for those who will be supporting team knight. and now, let'shear from the folks online and here in thepax west arena-- who will be cheering for team samurai? looks like these teamshave quite a rowdy crowd


behind them. got your work cut outfor you, team knight, coming in as maybethe crowd underdogs. but why don't youall take a seat? and i'm going to talkwith the team captains here before we get kicked off. all right, first off i'm goingto talk with tangent gaming here-- captain of the knights. tangent, talk to us a littlebit about your "for honor"


experience and howyou're planning to lead your team to victory. well, i've got about 30hours in the alpha so far. basically, we'regoing to not tell you guys how we'regoing to win the game. i like it. playing it cagey. keeping it under wraps. fairlight excalibur,you, yourself--


i think-- are one of the mostexperienced "for honor" players here. how do you think that experienceis going to help your team out? i trained 1,000 years in amountain dojo for this moment. i was born to playthis game, and you don't pick a swordfight with a guy whose last name is excalibur. he talks a good game, folks. we're going to seehow that plays out


in the battlefield itself. why don't you guys goahead, have a seat, get set up with yourteams, and we'll get ready to go herein just a minute. as the teams getset up, jeff and i are going to set up ourcaster station here, and the actionwill begin shortly. jeff, we've got knights,we've got samurai. i think one of the mostimportant things to clarify,


first off, is the samuraiaren't all choosing samurai, the knights are allchoosing knights. in "for honor"multiplayer matches, you're free to chooseheroes from any faction. that is correct. we wanted to allow you guysto choose who you wanted to embody on the battlefield. heroes just aren't tied tofactions, or play styles. each hero is uniquein his own right,


and we didn't wantto limit anyone from really showing who theywere in the heat of the battle. so we'll see whochooses which heroes here in the first ofour best of five match, we'll get started shortly. now jeff, when yousit down-- when a team is sort ofcoming together to play-- what do you think isthe-- right out of the gate-- the most important beat forthem to hit strategy-wise?


what do they need to beall on the same page about? it's exactly that. they need to beon the same page, and communication is key, man. whether you have a strategygoing into the battle, that can all bethrown to the wind within a matter of seconds. it's all about tactics,and the key to tactics are communication.


live updates withyour teammates. even when you're dead, weprovide a spectator cam that allows you topan the battlefield and provide feedbackto your team as to where the threats are. it's all about prioritizingthreats and leveraging your opportunitiesduring the battle. here we see we've got theattackers and defenders. all lined up here, ready to go.


saw some-- saw a vikingraider in the mix there, and we are going to see themplaying with on overwatch? so overwatch is oneof our samurai maps. it's based in the mire-- that isthe home region of the samurai. is the overall feeland architecture of the map is uniqueto the samurais. now we're going to be gettinga good look at this map here in just a second. those capturepoints-- a, b, and c


as we saw in thedominion overview-- b is the one where themelee is happening. where all the enemy footsoldiers are in the mix. do you go there first? do you try to get on the wings? what do you like to do? well, as i mentionedearlier, b-- or the front-- is more about not justcapturing the zone, but pushing throughthe threshold.


so it could very wellbe their first priority, but this map has aunique set up where point a provides a high groundand an overview of the map. we are on board withthe blue team here. the blue team is-- jeff: the blue teamare the defenders. so they're the ones who aretrying to hold their sanctuary and oppress the attacking team. chris: and so forour purposes here,


that's team knight inthe blue, and they've come out early--capturing c. but here we see the front-- thebattle is happening there jeff: yeah. so you mentioned the front. key to the frontis a type of hero that you choose togo into battle with. certain-- there, you see it? so certain heroeshave a preference


due to their range and theirweapon to be in the front, you know? it's like fighting alot of little soldiers. one on one, they won't do much. but a group of tenone-year-olds can really do some damage after a while. chris: all right. it looks like this raiderknows a thing or two. jeff: so here, wehave a two on one.


but those of youmay have noticed that there's environmentalhazards that you can use to your advantageto try to help yourself in an outnumbered situation. chris: just ran byone of my favorites there, the spike wall. jeff: so there's an exampleof the raider's stun. what that does is it takesalmost all of the hud and ui off of your opponent'sscreen, making it harder


for them to readwhich direction you're going to be attacking from. here you can see anotherexample of the environment being a threat. in this specificzone, the trap doors open throughout the battle--making it more and more dangerous to be in this zone. but at the same time, we wantyou to be there for points. chris: we've gotquite a fight there,


and now the raider hasjust popped a revenge. oh! jeff: so there, we see theimportance of the execution. that enemy no longerbe revived and has to wait out therespawn time, putting his team at a disadvantage. chris: team knight with astaunch defense of point c, but team samurai with thepoint lead, currently. jeff: so right now allthree captures are in play.


as you can see, there's onlyabout 100 points difference. one of the keys to being ahero is that all out offense often isn't thebest way to proceed. sometimes defensecan be your best key to a productive offense. chris: oh. there's that spike wall. jeff: so somebody whowas taken into the spikes by a heavy attack.


you really have to beaware of your surroundings. chris: that was a nice killby defender number four. jeff: so here, we cansee one of the defenders- a raider-- going to capturepoint a. point a only has two paths to whichit can be approached-- both of the bridges. and it also givesyou a high ground to assess the front, andthe status of zone c, giving updates andfeedback to your teammates


throughout the match. so as you can see,team samurai still have about 150 pointbuffer but that can easily change when one or twocapture zones come into play. chris: and there we seeit happen right now. the capture zone switches,and now team knight has a slight point advantageholding down two points. so we have twocapture zones fully controlled with point c in flux.


so communication onboth sides should be to support friendliesat c, but there it goes back to the attacker. chris: here we see fairlightexcalibur, manvsgame, annemunition, and cobalt streakon team samurai currently trailing, and we've gota hot pursuit in action. that happens often, and that'sa key to the melee based combat. it's all about range, readingspaces in the environment, and taking advantageof your character--


not just their weapons,but their movement ability. dodging, evading,blocking, and attacking. chris: nice kill there byteam samurai-- annemunition. jeff: so here isa spectator cam. this player canmove around the map and give feedback totheir team while they're waiting to respawn. gassy mexican witha nice throw there. jeff: if gassymexican was smart,


he'd get closer tothe fire and try to use the environmentto his advantage. fire, spikes, drops. anything in the game worldthat looks dangerous, for the most part, it is. so another thing that iwanted to point out-- you'll see in the bottom lefthand of the screen right now, with thisraider in particular, we've got a skullwith soldiers of it.


this is a feat,and you gain feats by increasing yourrenown by doing certain play styles and certainelements during a match. so right now, this raidergets double the reward for killing soldiers. that puts the emphasison going to the front and taking advantage of thefeat and the character loadout. chris: we saw one of those willfeats in the dominion breakdown video we watched earlier.


now a lop-sidedfight that does not go team samurai's way, and abrutal decapitation by team knight. jeff: so we had almost all fourof the defenders in the lane in the front, clearing it out. and now, they've prettymuch all three points. so they're 170 points awayfrom putting the attackers so as you can see with theraider's unbridled rage, he's got no concernabout defense.


he's on the all outoffense, swinging that axe and taking fools down. chris: and the blue teamvery close to pushing over that 1,000 point barrierand pushing the orange team jeff: here we can seethat the attackers have left a uncontested, meaningit's an easy capture for the defenders and they can--oh, spoken little too soon. so here we see atwo on one fight. this is where spaceand environment is key.


a lot of our communityfeedback was, hey it's reallyhard for us to work in outnumbered environment. and as you can see there,it is easy to be killed. but we've beenworking really hard to be relevant features tosupport outnumbered fights. we'll talk about those inthe proceeding matches. chris: there are someways to tip the scales, but then thereare also sometimes


you end up with a swordin your shoulder blade. jeff: so here, we havezone a being boosted. not only do they havethe 100 points from it, they take over anextra two points a second to stay withtheir team and help them meet the 1,000 threshold topush the enemies into breaking. chris: that was tangentgaming holding down that elevated point over there. now we'll switch back overand see a nice kill there


by team knight and cohhcarnage. jeff: so here, you'll seethe feedback onscreen. that cross meant if therewasn't a threat to the attacker, they could stop andrevive a friendly. bring them rightback into battle and skip the respawn time. chris: could have used anotherbuddy right about then, but he's making his escape. jeff: they're never therewhen you need them, right?


so you can see here,everything revolves around the heart of battle. that the stance inwhich the hero is in. it depicts where you blockand where you attack, but here we have ourfirst round of breaking. chris: and team samurai pushingback to capture that point. jeff: the attackersneed to be smart here. if they lose capture zone c, allof the attackers will respawn. however, none of themare dead so it's not


a risk at this time. chris: we just caughta glimpse there of this big battering ramthat's on the field starting the swing. really just adding to thewhole ambience of this battle. well that's it, man. it's based around a siege,and a siege isn't just killing the enemyforces or opposing forces-- it's about breachingtheir sanctuary, their place


of safety. chris: got a fiercetwo on two here. jeff: so this is wherecollaboration is key. do you go two on one andget attacked from behind? so here we have double breaking. both teams are above the1,000 point threshold, and now we can seeit's a four on two. if the defenderscan hold their own and finish out thelast two attackers,


this match willbe theirs to win. so now it's an all out manhunt. chris: is that thelast remaining member of team samurairunning around there? jeff: he's going to go-- chris: going for the revive! jeff: so this is wherecommunication is key. all four of them chasing thetarget isn't a good idea. you've got to think aboutthe setup and the space


and find a way to cutthem off and really get them in a corner. there you go. here comes some strategy. obviously, we're goingfor the revive here. you can see somepanicked faces behind us. some shouting. chris: looks that'slolrenaynay frantically trying to stay alive.


he's got the entirety ofthe enemy team after her. jeff: and there you have it. nice round of applause therefor the victors-- team knight. or was it team samurai? it was the defenders. chris: it was the defenders. team samurai. raise your hands, team. well you guys won, didn't you?

nicely done. let me check in withher real quick here. an honorable move, though,offering the last player a one on one. have you foundthat to be sort of common in youralpha experiences? in the first alpha,it was very common that when the teamthat was losing was down to one personinstead of ganging up on them,


the other threeof your teammates would stand by and watchand one person duels them. it basically giveshim a last chance to stand up for their team. inevitably, theyusually die anyway but it's at leastgive them a last stand and i think that's really cool,and it fits the honor theme. you try to help themdie with some dignity. i wouldn't go that far.


lolrenaynay, youwere frantically running around there. what were you trying--what were you-- what was your hopethat you were clinging to to maybe just stay alive? to stay alive. yeah, pretty much. just please don't putan axe in my face? yeah, i was justsprinting and hoping


that maybe, if iran long enough, they would get tired andthen just leave me alone and then i would win. that was like my dreamthat didn't come true. sure, they just get suckered. they're just like,she's just running laps. let's just park it here and, idon't know, forget about her. didn't work out that way. my last resort was to justthrow myself off the edge,


but i didn't know how to. talk about dying with dignity. we'll get set up here for oursecond match-- team knight versus team samurai. so that was an interesting. one of two of thethings that came up during those post-matchinterviews-- one of which was at the end of a match,often times-- and i've participated in a lotof our live events--


we really do see thatthe community goes for the honor aspect of it. it will be a four on one,there will be one left. someone from the winningteam will step forward and they're really let themgo one on one, hero to hero, to see if it canmake a difference. and i've seen itpersonally on our floor, one remaining teammate wasable to go through our team twice before weactually took him down.


so one hero reallycan make a difference. so even though thepoints are out of play, and you're somewhatdestined, you can still fight for your prideand your honor as a hero. i like that a lot. you just sort of-- allright, you're going to fight. you're going to diethat honorable death of fighting as opposed to,maybe throwing yourself off the ledge.


although that would bequicker and more dramatic. hey maybe, that's somethingthat's unique to the samurai. you never know, eh? another point that wasmentioned was the fact that it was kind of a ratrace at the end of it. that's another point. even know there's four on one,communication was still a key. here we go for match two. so here we have the wardengoing right into the front.


this is almost the bread andbutter for this character. he can take outa lot of soldiers and really push his team towin the front off the bat. oh, want a dodge. well played, but youdidn't go far enough. so here you can see thesoldiers do play in the battle, and they make a bigdifference in the fights. you can use them as anavigation tool, or a deterrent against the enemies.


here we have a twoon two in zone c. this is a zone closestto the attackers spawn. so if the defenderstake this, they're really going on theoffensive and saying, we're going to win this battle. just a quick clarificationfor those of you folks watching at home. we've actuallygot team samurai-- the victors of the first matchin orange this time around.


they're the attackers. sorry, they're inblue this time around. says orange on the screen,they're actually blue. and team knight are thedefenders in orange. defenders in blue. jeff: see? so there we have araider trying to run. chris: i've just confusedeverything even more. let me just get-- let mejust iron it out, jeff.


team samurai is blue,team knight is orange. jeff: we'll go with that. team knight is the blue, andteam samurai are the orange. chris: peeked at theirscreens, and these guys are playing on the blue side. jeff: either way, we'll gowith the attacker, defender. so here we have it. the defenders are currentlywinning the battle. chris: and they'vegot those two points.


and now we watch araider trying to make a move on one of those points. jeff: so while wewatch these guys get used to the art of battle andthe intricacies of each hero, those of you out at homewatching with a keen eye will notice this is nolonger a samurai map. here we are in oneof the knight maps. you'll notice adifference right away. the infrastructure, thesize, the epic structures


that they built andthe set up of the map is completely different. [grunting] chris: and we're goingto see team blue going for those revives, havinganother player right back on the field with you. as anyone who'splayed a multiplier competitive game withreviving knows, so powerful. jeff: yeah, man.


the ability toskip respawn really helps you make a difference. but on the flip side ofthat, we wanted a way for you to ensure that thatcouldn't happen and that a hero that you fellhas to sit through the respawn. that's where executionbecomes important because both on revive andon the execution, you're initiating an animationthat leaves you open to attack. so you really have toconsider whether you


want to follow through. executing an enemy not onlymeans they have to respawn, they take on a penaltyand it gives you a healthy buff or a healthregen. so there's a benefit and a cost to everything. chris: the crowdreally seems to like that knock him to the ground,knee him in the face move. the stun definitely has,you know, it's benefits. but when you'rein a group fight,


do you really want toinitiate that or do you want to use the spaceand wait for support? so here, we have a female raiderdoing her part in the lane, clearing through the soldiers. really working to push the fronton behalf of the defenders. so that's key. all three of these heroesthat we're seeing today are vanguard, as i said-- kindof like the all rounders-- and all three heroesin all three factions


are available in a maleand female loadout variety. so you can really choosea hero and customize it to who you want to beon the battlefield. chris: and even here, we seetwo male raiders facing off but they've got adifferent look to them. there is deep customizationin terms what your characters armor looks like, whatcoloration and patterns you've got on there, the works. jeff: yeah, weworked really hard.


our art directordoes a lot of work in ensuring thatthere's visual variety. as you can see,there's a decapitation. but the thing withthe visual load outs is that really you canmake yourself prominent. so when the opposingteam sees you coming, they know what they're in for. they can run and hide,group up, or really try to step up and takeyou one on one.


so there is an exampleof the kensei level three feat-- the smoke bomb. that is a tool that allows youto evade outnumbered fights, or really just blur thebattlefield for the opponent. see? so the kensei,right now, is going into a part of themap that is narrow that will limit his opponents toattacking front on-- keeping it one on one even thoughhe's outnumbered in a three


on one fight. chris: saw little collusionthere on the ladder. the ladders are not-- theyare part of the battleground. just because you'reon a ladder doesn't mean someone's notcoming to get you. jeff: no, that is true. ladders often provide alternateroutes to high ground, but one of the keys to beingaround high ground and ledges are not only can you be thrownoff the ledges but enemies


can attack from above--giving them a single hit kill or, as we like to callit, death from above. so you always have to be awareof your surroundings, both immediately but also vertically. chris: here we seethe blue team-- team samurai-- pushing that centerpoint, claiming the front. jeff: and as you mentionedbefore in the last map, this is similarin dominion mode. you're trying to breachor save your sanctuary,


so we have the battering ramin the middle of the front. so here, we can see that theattackers own capture zone c. so while they sit in thezone, they get a health regen. it really pushes the ideaof strategy and communicate. we didn't want a rovinghoard of four heroes being able to win amatch, so we strongly listen to the communityfeedback and came up with tweaks that would promotecommunication and collaboration on the battlefield, leveragingthe spaces and the areas.


chris: looks like this raiderhas activated one of his feats just as the teamgoes into breaking. so here we go. it looks like they'll beable to rally immediately if they can capturezone c, but it's all about-- not just capturingzones, but holding them so you keep thosepoints out of play. zones a, b, and c areall worth 100 points when they belong to your team.


but as soon you lose them, thepoints go to the other team. so those are what we'vecoined as soft points. they're yours whileyou have the zone, but they can alwaysbe taken away. as opposed to hard points. hard points are earned bykilling heroes or boosting capture zones. those points can never betaken away from your team. so here we are onceagain in breaking.


chris: and once again,team samurai actually in blue this round pushingteam knight onto the ropes. and now we saw an execution,so that friendly can not be revived unless the attackerscan rally out of breaking. they are lookingpretty close, though. although if theyzone a, it's looking pretty close to being done. so here we can seethe three feats that this raider has gained.


the third one is what we liketo call internally berserker. it gives a speedand an offense buff because he's not thefastest of heroes. but with this feat, he reallybecomes a formidable opponent. so the attackers aredefinitely doing their part to win the pointsback, but here we go-- using the soldiers as anadvantage and using his feat. chris: he's got hisback to the fire and is-- he's goingto catch on fire.


jeff: here's anothercommunity feedback option. we listened to thecommunity, and outnumbered fights were almostnear impossible to win. so this is what wecall revenge mode. it makes your attacksuninterruptable, and it gives you anoffensive and defensive buff. but sometimes, it'sjust not enough, chris. chris: certainly not. and now we've gotone attacker left.


jeff: and it's pretty easy tosee by the faces who it is. it's a team captainon the attacker team. there's a couple ofoptions for the defenders. if the ac enemiesthat are felt, they can protect the bodiesto prevent revive. there was the sprint attackthat ended it, chris. chris: there it is. and that is anotherwin for team samurai. jeff: so as thedefenders won, they're

is that correct? i believe it was. you are a well-known badasshere on the "for honor" fields, but i want to talk tomanvsgame over here real quick. man, how did thatmatch go for you? who were you finding yourselfplaying with the most success as? you know, honestly i'm a fanof, like, the medieval fighting style so i prefer the knight.


feels real good to justslice someone's head off with anexecution move there. that's what i'm reallygoing for every battle. the crowd likes that, too. so you definitely gottheir interests at heart. you're a man of the people. that's right, that's right. i got that showmanship. you got a really beatthem down as best you can.


for the next match,you're looking ahead. are you making any strategicadjustments for your play in terms of whatwe're going to see from your team inthe next round? i definitely-- i think--i have noticed now when my health is low, and sonow i know to pull back and get back to one of our checkpointsthat we have to heal up, i wasn't doing that before. so it seemed to workout well last time,


but so i'm going totry to do that again. that healing is crucial. that will hopefully keep youguys on your winning streak let's come over here to teamknight and gassy mexican. now you guys are kindof on the ropes here. how did that lastmatch go for you? badly, chris. yes. the outcome was not inyour favor, you know,


but in every battle youhave those moments right where you do that thing andyou're like, yeah i got it. what was your momentof the battle? i didn't have too manymoments, but here's the thing. like, we came out, wegot like a mild applause. they came out, got the applause,and they're also dominating. so like, you know howusually there's the underdog? like, we could use some ofthat support just a little bit. little bit.


there we go. you got a crowd buff now,you guys are boosted, and now you're readyto get into round three here in our bestof five "for honor" showdown here atthe pax west arena. so they spokebriefly there about how they've beenbeaten in both rounds. and so something that'simportant about the characters that they're-- the heroes thatthey're playing is the ability


to increase your renown andunlock feats because feats can very much be the keyto making a difference, especially when you'reunder the gun, so to say, and your team really needssomething to turn around the flow of the battle. feats are gained with renown,and they tie into the hero type that you're playing andhow you work in the battle. so we'll talk moreabout that in the match. we caught a glimpseof a few of them,


but let's keep an eye onthose for the next match because, as you were mentioning,there's different ways to amplify therenown you're getting and really play that sort of--the battle a little bit more tactically and adapt on the fly. we'll get into it once thenext match starts up here. team knight versus team samurai. we're going to seethe crowd now giving a little boost to team knight,our underdogs over there.


hoping to see a few morematches, i think, here out of our best of five. jeff: i must say, chris. i'm a knight at heart,man, so i'm with you guys. come on. teamwork. you can do it, gang. plenty of support goingteam knight's way. and here we are on theviking homeland, it seems.


here we have river fort. the viking homelandof valkenheim. it's snowy, it'sbrute, it's raw. they work with thelandscape and they make what they needto meet their needs, and that's about it. so here we have a similarsetup to overwatch where we can see zone a looksout over the entire map. controlling this zone canreally give you the upper hand


in controlling the battle. chris: again, for those ofyou watching at home, just to keep track of which coloris which just flip those names. and we got a roar from thecrowd here after that ring out. jeff: so there we had araider use his throw ability to straight away take anenemy out of the capture zone and then go support afriendly and win the duel. this map is very muchabout using nature, so you'll see a lot ofdrops, a lot of ledges,


and you really need to payattention to the environment. chris: and that brutalexecution was the handiwork of fairlight excaliburworking those stuns and working thatunblockable combo. yeah, it's very much thekey to that character-- the unblockable combo. while it's not unblockable,it can be dodged. but at the sametime, you need to be aware of what's aroundyou and who's around you.


are you able to dodge? where should dodge? is it making it riskier foryou dodging close to a ledge? should you just take the hitand focus on the defense? so we spoke before about feats. so all of thevanguards-- while they're tied to a factionin their unique and their own way,vanguards in general have three mainkind of preferences


to allow you to level up yourrenown and unlock your feats. and those are, in a nutshell,getting captured zones, getting to a zone andcapturing it for your team. that'll give you renown points. there's also killing soldiersand reviving friendlies. so keeping a [inaudible] oran eye on those three things will help you levelup, gain renown, and have your feats to makea difference in the battle. chris: and we've gotten a lotof the teams gathered here


on point a battling it out. still early in the match, sowe're not seeing the level two, level three feats yet. but certainly peoplemaking progress towards bringing those extraabilities into the fray. jeff: and anotherthing that we really haven't spoken abouttoo much, but we just saw there is the need to controlyour stamina-- the green bar underneath your healthis your stamina.


it tells you how muchgas you have in the tank. if you're constantlydodging, you're going to run out of breathand be a really easy opponent to take out. not only does staminaaffect your mobility, it also means you're unableto put any chains together, which makes you much weakeras an offensive force. chris: nice kill thereby tangent gaming. jeff: so overall,we haven't really


been talking too muchabout the heroes. but throughout allthree matches so far, we've had a good spread, chris. we've had the warden--both male and female. we've had the raiderand the kensei. and i haven't noticed toomuch of a strategy yet with the boathouse, but we'llsee how this game plays out and maybe it'll affecthow they play match four if we make it to that point.


but right now, it'slooking pretty good. chris: it looks like team knighthas all three points captured. again, just switchthose colors, folks, and you'll be in putwith the action here. jeff: so you can seeright now the raider-- the first feat is apassive feat, meaning it's always active. every soldier he killsgives him a health buff, but it also helps himgain further renown.


so he's unlocked a moralebooster, the second feat. the third is berserker,and he's well on the way to the fourth feat. so on the flipside of that, here we have the knight alsoworking in the lane because killingsoldiers is a good way to increase your renown. chris: that pick up and carrymove just does not get old. i love it.


so here we have the opportunityto use high ground to take out the attacker inthe capture zone, but i guess it wasn't needed. chris: it's thatmedieval chiropractor. jeff: a nodachi down the spinalkind of takes care of you. chris: you'll bealigned, all right. jeff: so here we have it, again. you can see two attackersnot on a capture zone and focusing a twoon one, but that


didn't work to their advantage. now it's flipped completelyinto a two and one in their disadvantage. so you really have to workto prioritize your threats. last but not leastis objective base. capture zones are keyto winning the round. so we're pretty muchback at honor's even. so let's see how thisplays out with 400 points, give or take, to put theother team into breaking.


chris: this is one ofthose perilous points where you do have the chance toget knocked to a lower ground and then hit from above. you do have the chance toget thrown off the ledge, or you have the chance tojust get a good old fashioned two on one. jeff: sometimes the sword'sthe best way to go, man. so here's a view of the mapfrom the attacker's side. obviously they're startingfrom outside of the sanctuary.


they've reached the first gate,but they're still really trying to make it into the courtyardin the main structure of this viking facility. oh, you were so close butjust not close enough, chris. chris: that kensei is going tomake a nice saving roll to get back to more solid ground. got to work that block, though. there's that bigviking axe coming down. jeff: so now if thisraider waits out his time,


he can capture the zone and usethis zone to regen his health and not die. stay in the battle andwork with his teammates. chris: oh! sent to the bottom. jeff: the extra health reallymade no difference there, chris. so here you can seethree attackers. they're very much decidingto work as a group.


whether it works outpoint-wise we'll wait and see. right now they have twoof the captures zones, but a is in flux andit can quickly change. chris: looks like wewere going to maybe see an execution there, but now weare involved in a fierce battle here and we that theraider attacking has all floor feats at the ready. jeff: and here we see--the kensei had feats. chris: didn't need the featsto put him onto the spikes,


though. jeff: so i don't want to soundlike i'm repeating a lot, but emile came out andwe spoke about working with the community. one thing is now whenyou die, you do not lose your renown or your feats. so even if you aren't thebest player on your team, by the end of the matchyou could have full renown and have that level four featto really make a difference.


we really wanted to be abalance of the playing field. for the firsttime, the attackers have put the defendersinto breaking. can they hold it off? this attacker actuallyhas a fourth level feat, which is a healingbanner which he can place in and healany of his friendlies within a certain range. chris: one can easilysee how that would change


the tide of an engagement. let's see if wesee it in action. jeff: ok. so we've got twoduels going on at a. and it's gone from threeon two to two on one by the looks of all thecrosses on the screen. chris: and it's theblue team-- team samurai trying to rally back. looks like you've got cobaltstreak there as the raider.


and the orange-- teamknight-- goes down. the defenders rally. jeff: so the defendersrallied there, but they're quickly backin breaking because instead of focusing on the capturezones while they had the hero advantage, they allhoned in on one hero-- meaning that they didn'ttake those soft points back and bring themback on their side. capture zones are allabout soft points.


once you have them, youhave to retain them. otherwise, they'realways in play. there we see it. so we have double breaking,but it's a four on two and all the soft pointsare still in play because there are only 15 to20 points above the 1,000 point threshold, chris. chris: so that certainly shiftedthe fate for team orange, no longer breaking.


not the blue team. jeff: team orangeheeded the advice. they saw that therewas a capture zone not being contested-- a--and they went and took it. now, essentially, there'sno choice-- well played. there's no choicefor the defenders to go out of breakingbecause there's only 300 points,soft points, in play and even if theylose them, they're


still above the 1,000point threshold. chris: and thisis the blue team. team samurai on the ropes. looks like fairlight excaliburare the last remaining samurai trying to make a run here. trying to stay alive. both: oh! jeff: there was adeath from above. chris: we almost sawthe death from above.


jeff: but there you seecommunication, chris. they took all four escapepoints and really tried to tie him down. chris: they arerunning him down. everyone's chasing him up theladder, but he came back down and knocked one ofthem to the ground. chris: he's on thepoint, he's on the ropes. jeff: so there you have it. chris: and there it is.


looks like all thosecheers did team knight well as they claim victoryover team samurai to force this to a fourth round. let's go check inwith the teams. i'm going to walk over here. got to talk to the captain, thevictor, here-- tangent gaming. you guys really turnedit around that time. feeling good? feels awesome.


basically, for thefirst few matches we weren't reallypaying attention to one of the third objectivesand so we were spending too much time-- fairlightis excellent at this game, as you guys haveseen now so far, and he's able just tohold that third objective. and so sometimes justwe've been meaning to actually split offand focus sometimes on fighting and actuallycapturing some objectives.


holding those objectives,getting those soft points, forcing you into breaking,forcing the other team how did it feel to be onthe winning side of breaking this time around. oh, it always feels good. it always feels good to actuallywin one every now and then. let's go check inwith the team that was on the wrong sideof breaking this time. i want to check in withannemunition over here.


anne, tell us about thehero you were playing at most of the time that round. i was playing the samuraifor the entire time, so. you're all samurai all the way? what do you likeabout the kensei? i really enjoyed his specialattack with the three-hit combo when you come down over thetop and they can't block it. the first two rounds iplayed the viking, though, so it was a little bitof a switch up for me.


and i'm going to count thatas why we lost that round. ok. you didn't go with yourstrong suit, the raider, so for the next round you'regoing to stick with the kensei or are you going backto your big raider? you know, i like to win. so i'm going to goback to the viking. we'll see if that changes thefate here for team samurai as they face off againstteam knight in round

melee combat game, everyhero makes a difference. and now you can see that thechange to the kensei that is more fluidity andchain based really made her feel like thatshe kind of didn't pull her weight in the battle,and that one hero can make a difference because you'vegot to control three zones and you only have four heroes. so you've got to pick andchoose both your hero loadouts, but your communicationand your play styles.


we've seen thepower of you know what one strong hero can doeven in outnumbered situations. you know, lots ofdifferent tools there to sort of marshalbetween evading and using the environment. using the revenge to sortof strike with unblockable strikes to using your feats. there's a lot of toolsin the warriors toolbox. there's definitely alot a deeper move sets.


we took a lot of time focusingin our fight mechanics in the variation ofit between the heroes and how they use their weapons. like we said, everyweapon is unique so the animations andtheir chains are different. you go from left, right,top-- or is it simply all top. light, light, heavy. you know, there'sa lot of variation and that reallychanges the setup.


but chris, it lookslike we're back in game. so should we get to it? we're back here at the samuraithemed map in the mire. as you can see, it's raining. and right off thebat, the attackers are going to push throughthe lane by the looks of it. chris: is it just me,or does that carry get longer every time we see? jeff: it all the depends aboutwhere they are, but yeah.


it definitely has some range. chris: ok. and again, we've gotthe colors swapped. so team knight is in orange,team samurai in blue and-- oh. one of those nasty nodachiexecutions right there. so executions progressas you progress as a hero and increase your renown, butthat was a variation of it. and they're all pretty badass, and they-- and they also play into thegameplay, like we said.


that hero can nolonger be revived, and now he's free to go usehis enormous nodachi to make a difference in the front. chris: you ever feel bad forthose foot soldiers facing off against the nodachi, theranger axe, and all that? jeff: yeah, theyreally have no choice. and not just that, the presenceof these heroes in the front really boosts theirmorale of their soldiers who will really go on theoffensive and come like a tide.


chris: speakingfrom experience, you can focus on an enemyhero inside that front, but if they've got a bunchof their warrior minions around them, that's going toreally cause a problem for you in terms of mobility, interms of chipping away at your health. it definitely issomething to contend with. it's like trying to have afight surrounded by 10 five year olds.


one on one they don't domuch, man, but a group of them will slowly wear you down. so not only do they affectyour health but, like you said, your navigation. and up against someonelike the kensei, you need to be awareof your surroundings. so they've definitely taken afocus onto the decapitations, or-- chris: executions.


jeff: executions. thanks for that, chris. so they're really going for afocus at taking out the heroes, not allowing them to berevived because don't forget that gives their friendlyrenown and helps them level up. so that's taking one oftheir core progressions away from themthroughout the match. so here we're boosting thezone, we're getting hard points, and regenerating our health.


seems like theattackers are definitely trying to egg the defendersaway from the zones so they can get them in duelsand hopefully take them one on one, we'll see howthat plays out, though, because the defendersare definitely managing the battlefieldbetter right now. chris: nice kill thereby cobalt streak. jeff: here we have thecrowd getting into it. come on, guys.


you can cheer him,on don't be shy. chris: woof! every time. so nasty. jeff: so here you cansee, man, the defenders have all three capturezones and they're very much going on the offensive. this is the first bridgeoutside of the attacker's zone, so we're right ontheir doorstep.


chris: and that is that goodslicing kensei execution by team samurai. really putting teamknight on their back foot here with all three points. jeff: yes. so here you can see this kenseiis at a key navigation point. he was controllingthe bridge, it was the only real access pointto zone a for the attackers. although as soon as i mentionedit, they gave it up so


we'll wait and see what happens. chris: that's how quickly thebattlefield shifts, spicer. jeff: now here weare back in the lane. we've got a threeon one, but you can see the attackers verymuch using his soldiers to help with navigation and defense. chris: tangent gaming herewith two of his feats. oh, a nice dodge there ofthat powerful strike coming in by the kensei.


jeff: and the key hereis even though you-- oh, so there's revenge. that's what i was talkingabout your ability to get the upper hand ina fight that you're not doing so well in. and so now his attacksare uninterruptible. he's got an offensiveand defensive buff. chris: some great blockingtheir by the kensei. they are both on the ropes here.


let's hear it, folks. who's going to come out ontop in this one on one duel? it's the kensei. jeff: the kensei isvery much a samurai. it's about finesse,movement, and fluidity. you saw there a greatuse of the chains. going from left to right, top. that top is actuallyunblockable, so the only choice is to dodge.


but as you saw, theydidn't do it in time and they fell pretty quickly. so now it looks like theattackers are taking the group approach andhopefully, as a team, they can last a little longerand get some zones back. chris: oh, i don'tknow this team knight member is heading over to bto try to tip the scales here. jeff: so once again, youcan see the passive feat. every soldier thatthis warden kills,


they're getting a plus onehard point and a health regen. there's a quick shotof the scoreboard. so the defenders have 100 pointsthat they own due to zone c, but irrelevant now that they'realmost at 800 hard points. so they're a coupleof kills away from pushing theattackers into breaking. and a quick rally by teamknight to stay in the game. jeff: so you'll noticenow at this capture zone, the additional trapdoors have opened.


so it's a muchsmaller fight space, and it's that muchmore dangerous. especially when you're againsta knight with the range of that carry throw. so that's one attacker down. there's three left, andthey better move quickly to get those zonesif they want to bring their friendly back, chris. chris: we're watchingfairlight excalibur here.


going to make a move totry to take this back. it's a two on two. he's close to the edge,manages to get a little space but he is in the pitcourtesy of cohhcarnage. jeff: so there we go. we're back into breaking again. chris: and that isteam knight in orange breaking team blue, samurai,and trying to their advantage. jeff: so let's see what strategywe're going to go forward


with the attackers here, chris. we see one runningback to spawn. his friendlies arecurrently not on the map. so it looks like they're downeither in the lane or near a. are they going togroup up, or are they going to go for the softpoints of the capture zones? chris: and this islolrenaynay finding herself in a tight spot,once again pursued. just dodged that strike.


everywhere she turns there'sa samurai waiting for her. but now her teammate comesto help alleviate things and-- oh no! jeff: there you havea friendly taking a friend into the pit, guys. you've got to be awareof what's going on, but it shows you just howquickly it can change. so we're down to one,we're over 1,300 points, this is the last standfor the attackers


and there you have it, guys. chris: that is it. team samurai, your victors herein the pax west "for honor" gauntlet. let's go check in. first, we're going to go overhere and console team knight. see how they did. tangent gaming, you guysfought valiantly that round. saw some nice moves.


what-- at the end of this all,what do you come away with feeling like man i cannotwait to do that again in "for honor?" it's really hard to describe,but the best way i can say it is that-- especially when doingthe one versus one duels-- there's just this certain,like, intense feeling. it just feels like fightor flight instinct kicks. it just really getsthe adrenaline pumping. it's just the mostvisceral dueling system

before we transition to thenext sort of phase of our action here, we're goinghave a panel with some of the creators and voiceactors for "for honor." let's check in with one of thenew things we actually saw. some astute viewerswill know that there was a new map on display, andlet's take a look at it here. a focus on river fort. jeff: so as you saidthis is river fort. the map very much epitomizesthe viking feeling.


not only is thefaction portrayed in the heroes themselves,but also within the world. this is the homeregion of the vikings. it's called valkenheim. it's cold, it's raw. everything you seehere is natural. they took something natural,made it to what they needed, and left it like that. in stark contrastto as we saw in what


we call citadel gate, which is aknight map, where they've taken the stone and they mastered it. they worked on thearchitecture, they've made it too much morethan it was initially. not so much with the vikings. is that pure, unbridled,raw feeling of nature and the necessities of life. you can see the drops-- --you can see theraw wooden spikes.


all of it comes intoplay, making sure that you and yourfriendlies really pay attention to the environmentand either use it as a tool to your success or disadvantage. speaking fromexperience, it only takes one time beingthrown off of a cliff to start paying attentionto every single place that you could get thrown offa cliff because you don't want that to happen to you twice.


no. and it's not just cliffs. we've got spikes,we've got fire traps, we've also got other mapswith dynamic traps that allow you to make thedifference based off of where the enemies are andwhere they're navigating. but all of that'sto come, chris. all that to come in just undertwo weeks on september 15th, the closed alpha for "forhonor" is kicking off

15th, which youcan still register for on forhonorgame.comwe've seen a best of five match between team knightand team samurai play out in brutal fashion, as all"for honor" conflicts must. and now, we've taking a lookat that e3 announcement trailer about the full-fledgedcampaign "for honor," introducing thevillain apollyon. we're going to dive deepnow into the narrative side of "for honor."


we're going to bring up peoplewho worked on creating the game and bringing thecharacters to life. so without further ado, let'swelcome up our first panelists. he's the creativedirector of "for honor." the man, the myth, the meleemavin-- jason vandenberghe. well done. fantastic. hey, guys. have a seat right there.


they put you in there. oh, yeah? up next, the woman without whomevery character in "for honor" would be thestrong, silent type. and now for ourtalented voice actors. from "read only memories,""galak-z," and "gone home," she's the voice acting queenof the indie mega booth and has her sights set on a newthrone as the viking raider, please welcome sara elmaleh.


yay! from soaring as superheroesof the video game, cartoon, and lego variety to formingup in the new voltron series on netflix,he's going to be a valuable teammatein "for honor" as the orochisamurai, josh keaton. and finally, toread her resume is to take a trip throughsome of the greatest games and animated series ever made.


she's commander sarah palmer,she's commander shepherd, and she-- in "forhonor," she's donning yet another commanding suitof armor as the warden knight. it's jennifer hale! thank you all so much forbeing here, coming up on stage here to talk about "for honor." it's an exciting day. oh my god. jason, let's start withyou because we just


got a refresher on the campaignreveal that showed at e3. let's start with the story. how did this thing get started? what's it all about? all right so, theworld of "for honor," as you saw, in the trailer--it's a world that builds up, right, in power, and there wasall sorts of factions growing and then this horribledisaster drove us into 1,000 yearsof darkness, right?


and now we're regrowing,we're coming back out of that. and now these three greatfactions of the knights, and the vikings, andthe samurai-- they're starting to bump upagainst each other, and the question hasemerged-- hey, we're fighting and we've been atwar this whole time. could we find a way tohave peace here, right? and then our villain, apollyonand her black stone legions, has a different agendabecause apollyon


has an opinion abouthumanity being divided into wolves and tosheep, and she wants to set the sort of wolves free. right? and so we're here to experiencethe consequences of that. she's trying to makethat war even war-ier? i mean, it's a bad sceneand making it worse. exactly. so good.


this is a dark setting. i mean, this is a world ravagedby conflicts where everyone we know-- they just know conflict. that is their whole world. what this game is reallyabout warriors and celebrating the history we havewith warriors, right? not a historicalgame, but we have these knights,and these vikings, and these samurai-- theymean something to us


in terms of our own belief aboutwhat warriors could be, right? what kind of a warriorcould we be, right? and so we created aworld that needs them. this world is aplace where if we don't have thosegreat warriors that are going to balance and pushus in the right direction, we'll just stay in darkness. and with any luck, we haveour amazing heroes here that are going tohelp us come out


and find a way to the light. and i believe we got a nicelittle video here to check out. kind of the world-- get a littlebit of a special introduction, is that right? so we have brought with us alittle bit of an introduction. so the campaign startswith the knights. you start with the knights, andour knight warden character-- played by jennifer hale here. she's amazing.


we have a little asset, whichis the warden's introduction to the world. it's sort of an openingperspective on this. so let's just takea quick listen to the warden talkingabout her plight. [audio playback] centuries afterthe cataclysm, there had been room enough for all. now we are too many.


elsewhere there is peace, butin the lands around ashfeld, peace is only a legend. three great peoplesclaim it as their own. the knights of theiron legion, the war borne clans of the vikings, andthe samurai of the dawn empire. the samurai stay in theirfortress cities in the mire, but each year the vikingscome down from their mountains or sail up our rivers. they take all that they can.


but in that year, we wouldlearn who are true enemy was. i mean, to take a settingthat is already so foreboding and make it evenmore foreboding-- that's what we do. that's what you do. let's get a quick little--delve a little bit more into the factions. we talked about themearlier during, you know, the presentations on thevarious vanguard characters.


but what sort ofmakes each group tick? what makes them unique? right. so i think that-- i've beenasking people for years all through theproduction this question and i love this question. i can say knight, viking,samurai and people always know the answer. usually you know.


i don't have to gofurther than that. which are you? and i find knights--people who answer knights, it's all about your value. what do you believe in? people who pickknights tend to believe in protection of the weak. it's being the defender. it's that sort ofangelic archetype, right?


that i'm going tostand and be like, oh i'm glad that they're there. they're going to protect me. people who pick vikingstend to pick vikings because of their passion,their belief, in sort of living life to the fullestand being completely out there and honest withthemselves and rah! that sort of approach to things. sort of living lifeto the fullest.


and people whochoose samurai, they seem to be about masteryand sort of the devotion to a higher ideal,this perfection that you know you'll knowreach but that you should try. like, that the act of tryingis its own value and service. so the three greatvalues of protection, of freedom andexpression, and of sort of mastery in skilland service i think are the three great archetypesof warriors, of real warriors.


i think that if you havea kind of a warrior spirit inside of you, i would hopethat you would find yourself in one of those three. all right, well, folksjason said, we all know, instinctually, let'sgo around real quick. jason-- knight,viking or samurai? chris? samurai. jennifer?


josh? viking. viking? i mean. pretty sure. very appropriate. myself, i think i'm a knight. that's sort of what i'm feeling. i just said that so i couldget a high five and it worked.


i'd be a lot cooler if icould be knight, but no. so, chris, with thesefactions, with this world you know-- it's a dark place. these factions have thesesort of unique identities. how does that, in yourrole as a voice director, craft your approach tobuilding these characters? i look for, in eachindividual actor, the seed of what i want togrow into this character. i really strongly believethat directing is mostly


casting because i like tosit-in the control room and laugh most of the time. so, you know, eachone of these actors has this incrediblesort of secret i'm going to reveal alittle bit about them. so things that people maybedon't know about them. jen, in her off time,when there's massive fires that you hear aboutin la, she will ride a horse in--literally, like, on a horse


and go rescue horsesfrom these massive fires that you read about. and it's somethingthat you're like, let me think aboutwhat nobility is. josh has-- a non-secrethistory as an incredible singer and performer. he used to travel theworld, he's doing yoga. and so we're talking aboutwith him always-- when we meet, we're in the kitchen.


we're talking about, ok,what is it about you that needs this thing. and we're always lookingfor the connection because these people they embodythese characters so strongly within themselves so thatit comes out on the mic. it's not a performance,it's a being. and sarah-- you'llhear a little bit more about the story of howunexpected her audition was. and then thinking more about herand her absolute fearlessness--


her tango practice, she movedall the way across the country, like, knowing nobody. this fearlessnessthat's the viking. and so finding thosethings in the actors and giving them that thingthat they can build on, that emotional anchorthat brings out-- well i mean it's fascinating tohear your how connected you are sort of with the actors and notjust their sort of performance acumen, but theirspirit and, you know,


how they really bringthose roles to life. so i want to talkto each of you sort of first about which characteryou play, and then how you connect to that character. so jennifer, you arethe warden knight. tell us about this characterbecause there's a story there beyond just suiting up inarmor, grabbing the broadsword, and heading into the fray. i mean the thing aboutthe warden knight


is i think for peoplewho gravitate to that, they're people whoyou, like myself, you want to make a difference. you want to savesomething, you want to stand for something huge, andi connect to that in a big way. it's almostinvoluntary every day. i'm like, ok, where'sthe difference. let's go find it. let's go be it.


if you read mytwitter stream, you're like oh really that again. and it's just it'sjust fun as hell. i mean, the firstsession-- i'll never forget we had these big sortof swords in the session that we got to play with,and they weren't sharp, but they-- and iwas like, oh yeah. we're doing it. we're doing it this way.


it's both that sort ofbig picture purpose thing, and it's also just thesheer fun of the battle and the whole thing. that is-- i mean,you've got to have swords when you're recording. you know, you've gotto have axes around. sarah, talk to us a littlebit about your character-- the viking raider. what's her story?


sort of where doesshe come from? she's coming down intothe battle, but why? why? she's like this bad assin the mountains who sees all this vikingon viking infighting, and she's like therewill be no more of this. we're going to take allthat lovely beastie energy and take it to the common enemy. so like other vikings,she's heart on her sleeve--


whether it's like joy-- likebattle joy-- or disgust, or determination, or pride. it's all on the surface, so it'sall in and enormously fun kind of cathartic characterto play cause she's just all on the surface, but withthis like clarity of purpose and this desire to unifythat gives her a lot of drive and a lot of active directionwhich is really, really fun. a very focusedcharacter even though you look at a viking raiderand you know might think,


that person's justgoing berserk. swinging that axe everywhere. but no. very, very purposeful. and jason, you've spoken aboutsort of all these characters having-- they'reall purpose driven. yes, that's right. each character that weplay in the campaign that these-- they'reall there to make


a difference in theirown way, but they all have a differentdefinition of what that is. what that means to each groupis very, very different. but at the heart ofit, it's really-- it's always aboutthat warrior ethic. that warrior ethic of ok, i cansee other people are running and i can't, andso i have to fight. and that brave-- that's bravery. and that's the heartof these characters.


that warrior ethic, josh. let's talk about yourcharacter, the orochi samurai. how does that ethic resonate? what's the motivationsfor your character? well the motivationsfor the samurai are basically protecting hishome and protecting his people, and putting that above all else. and that can translate intohim looking beyond just his own people aspart of the fight,


and he's somebody who--he's unapologetic. he has this confidenceabout his beliefs that overrides everything. so i'm not sure how much ofthe story we can give away, but he's been sittingin jail for three years because of something he said,yet he still stands by it. but he also reallyharbors no ill will towards the emperor who puthim in jail because, you know, he was doing his job.


i said what i was going to say. that's pretty equanimous abouthaving sat in a cell for years and not been fightingfor his people. i admit, i would find thata little hard to stomach but that speaks to sort ofthat unity of the samurai, that disciplined-- and the honor that goes with,well this is my emperor. so he put me in prison,i should be here i guess. now i'm out and i'm going toget back to what's happening.


excellent. these characters--it's wonderful that the more we see of"for honor," the more we're seeing of the story,the more we're seeing of these individual sortof characters stories coming down from the mountain,coming out of jail. jennifer, what's the startingpoint for the warden knight? we sort of talked aboutwhat the banner purpose is that she rallies behind, but interms of the campaign's story,


where does she begin? well, you know, really justlooking for a place to matter. there's no where to reallymake a difference when we begin, there's sortof-- everything is kind of in shambles, andthen she happens upon the beginningof everything. and yeah. looking for a place to jumpin, looking for a reason to be. to what chris wassaying earlier,


you know, she seessomething in you. she sees something in you. she sees somethingin you that resonates with these characters. when you first cameinto the studio and started engagingwith this character, what kind of connectiondid you feel? oh, man. it was instant, andit's with the team.


there's this crazy energy thathappens when you get in there, and every game has its ownflavor and every character has their own-- absolutelytheir own individuality. but i mean when i walkedin and i saw those swords, i was like, aw. this is gonna besuch a fun session. you know and you goin there and you're kind of finding your zone inthe first couple few takes. first of all, theenergy of these guys.


i mean, come on. and we go in thereand you know you got it went out ofthe corner of your eye you see the head boband the arm move. you're like, yes. we're in the zone, i got ahead bob and an arm move. yes, it's a good day. josh. when you came in to put on thata orochi samurai pauldrons,


metaphorically,how did you feel? how did you connectwith that character? well the connectionkind of started for me at the audition phasebecause the first thing that it said in the break down wasthat the samurai was yojimbo inspired, and i'm a hugekurosawa fan, huge toshiro mifune fan. i know yojimbo very well. so really kind of looking atthe character in that film,


looking at thecharacter in this, there's a lot of similaritiesin terms of their intensity, in terms of their focus, andthe fact that neither of them really speak muchunless they have to. everything they sayis very measured, and they can go fromsilence to being a rabid dog to back to silent again inthe blink of an eye, which is pretty much how he fights. and so there's alot of crossover


between the voice andthe fighting style, and so that reallyresonated with me. i'd say yeah. i mean, a lot of it-- andthen even the determination that a samurai has interms of wanting everything to be about honor and masteryreally resonates with me a lot. i mean, i have the kanjiequivalent for determination tattooed on myself, sothat's kind of a life tenant that i've always had.


so it wasn't so much yourspirit that chris saw, it was your tattoo. it was the tattoo. i sent a picture overwith my audition. i'm in. well, sarah, imean you know you've been living the vikinglifestyle your whole life. obviously raiding fromthe north, you know, is kind of anatural fit for you.


so when you cameinto the studio, you were right on par, right? oh yeah. i mean, it's funny. yeah, i came in andtalking to jason and then seeingthe character-- it was so powerfulbecause she wasn't just like a fierce warrior. she's, like, a burly chick.


like, she's huge. and i was like, thisis going to be-- it's going to be messy, andraw, and growly, and spitty, and just like all bets off. and i was like, this isgoing to be so much fun. and that's-- like, i don'twalk around spitting at people, but i am very sort of effusiveand kind of what you see is what you get. it was just so exciting.


it was such a thrill. yeah, that was really powerful. yeah, it was awesome. jason, i think-- let's makea little clarification here because while we have threeof the actors who play-- three of the rolesin "for honor"-- there's not justone warden knight, there's not justone orochi samurai, and there's not justone viking raider.


we have half of the casthere because, of course, you get the choice to playmale or female with each of these characters. and so we have another setof amazing performers, right? --the other side ofthese characters. the male-- our male warden isliam o'brien, who is incredible and i've worked withbefore and i love. our male raider is traviswillingham who is, if you know. from-- both of those guysare from "critical role."


i don't know if there's any"critical role" fans here, but they're you knowthe-- travis is-- [growling] and our female samuraiis courtney taylor, who is amazing. who is just isperfect, pure warrior. amazing. so, again, it'shalf the cast here. you guys have got a wholetalented roster there.


and so chris, you've gotthese people coming in. they come, youknow, they're sort of trying out their bestwarrior yells and poised leadership sort ofdeclarative statements and swordplay, apparently. how did the castinggo for "for honor?" how did you sortof go about putting these people in these rolesand getting things moving? well, we've castall over the country,


and we also cast in canadaand we ended up-- yeah, so we did a lot of casting. we listened tohundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of auditions. we had a ton ofmeetings, and maybe you should tell yourstory about the dream? oh, lord. so we had-- i mean, foreach of these people the auditions were amazing.


the auditions come in, like frommy perspective-- chris goes, hey, here's the net. and then all thesefiles start coming back, and these auditions start comingback and i start hearing them, right? but even from thebeginning, when we talked about whatwe were shooting for, we started talkingabout the knight warden and we were talking aboutthe female character


and we had this conversationwhere i was like, i'm really-- she's very noble. i'm thinking, like,could we get someone who's like jennifer hale? could we get, like, that? and there was this long pause,and chris is like, well i know jennifer hale. i mean, we could justask her to audition. we could just do that.


like, she's, like, i'm not here. and then i'm like, click. click. yes, let's do that. yeah, that would be great. that's the new plan right there. that was fantastic. and then we had--i mean with josh, it was actually prettysimple with josh.


it was-- the performances andthe auditions all come in, and we hear his voice andthe way that he does a thing. and he's just-- i mean,you'll hear it later. it's just-- we're like,oh that's the guy. you hear this sort ofdevotion, this concentration, this seriousness, andthen just a little bit of like an overconfidence,maybe a bit just a little bit ofarrogance in there. like he's a badass andhe kind of knows it.


we're like, yeah. ok, this is our guy. this is just perfect. but i think thebest-- i mean what i loved was-- the best onewas with sarah's audition. so we brought an asset withus, actually, to show you guys. this is the end of this storybecause casting the raider female, we knew it was goingto be a challenge because we wanted this big bombastic,like, she's gonna be huge.


she's really,like, and fighting. it's tough to find. and so we get the things backand we're listening through, and i hit sarah'saudition and it's like, well let's just take a look. so what we've gotis an asset that is a cinematic rightfrom the first mission of the viking campaign. it's super work in progress,but it's got her vo in here.


so the context here is thatthe raider has been-- is sort of what you were saying. shutting down the vikings whoare fighting other vikings. and here we've got ragnar,who's the other viking boss, and we're kind of at the end. and so we're going to seehow our sara handles herself. you're going to seeplaceholder models, and it's all gray stuff,but let's take a look at how the raiderhandles the problem.


what you've done is wrong. you beast! while all aroundyou people starve! you and you warriors will learnto live like the rest of us. or you will becomefood for the crows. idiot child. might as well ask meto pick up farming! we're raiders! so that's a no?


so i mean, it wasso far over the top. i mean, it was the most fearlessaudition i have ever heard. it was incredible. and i mean we were--i mean i think, chris, you were like youwere like waiting like, is it going to be ok. like, is it-- how do you-- itwas just a slam dunk for us. so it was amazing. do not say no to sarah elmaleh.


threw herself into it. it was amazing. that's the thing. it's just like whenwe're recording lines. if the character is speakingthe truth, you know it's right. and there is thisobjective moment where everybodyfeels like, oh shit. and that-- it happens when we'relistening to auditions as well, and it happened with all ofthese and the rest of our cast.


so sarah, you comein there-- i think i've heard you say thephrase in reference to your characterrighteous anger. we got a little glimpse ofthat in that sort of work in progress clip. when you're coming withthat roar of, like, just ferocity it's-- howdo you sort of, like, conjure that all up butwithout going just bonkers and screaming your face off?


i mean, you probablydo that too. i do. but i guess how do youfind out and channel that energy in the right way? i mean, i think that i--like, i don't get angry myself or on my own behalf very often. it's not like a drivingforce in my life usually. but that clarity of fighting--of people fighting each other or just wrong doingamong your own family,


or people messingwith your family, like that's so clear to me. like, you don't do thatto my friends and family. so like, that comes-- ithink that, because it's outside myself, it'svery easy to find. you're just like, thisis wrong and i need to do something about this. so, i don't know. yeah, it doesn't-- it'snot work to summon.


it's work to refine and tosort of hit-- especially when you're doing somethingto picture, like, you want to make surethat you're mapping the beats as in this scene. but i don't know, it's justnot that tricky to find. well it was interesting. we were talking lastnight and, you know, i'm sort of picturing, ok,you're playing the viking. you're going tocome in and just,


like, lay it all out there. put everything into it. but, chris, you had-- youtalked to me about a note that you gave sarahthat wasn't try hard or put more force into it. oh, yeah. it was actually the opposite. it was, yeah. [inaudible].


no, well it's because thecharacters are so incredibly fit and because they'vebeen doing this so often-- their entire life. their training doesn'tactually take that much effort for her to wieldher axe or for her to wield any of her daggers,or her swords, or anything because, for her, it's practice. it's every day. she is killing foolsevery day, and it's


completely comfortableand natural for her. so if we have anaturalism, then it allows the player toreally engage and feel as though they are apart of it as well. so we're really allabout engaging the player emotionally, and thatis making it real, making it less performedand more natural. it's always fascinatingfor me to get a look into this sort of how thesecharacters come to life.


what-- you know,what do you need? the guidance to bring outthat rage in yourself, but also act no, like,this is what i do. i am this powerful. so, josh, you know-- when you'retaking on the orochi samurai i guess we talked alittle bit about some of the connections you madeto the character yourself, but when you're in thatstudio, you know what-- like, what's helping youget into that moment?


what's helpingyou-- what are sort of the things you'refocusing on to channel that spirit of that warrior? well, i think of my own family. i have two youngkids, so tapping into the primal rage ofanybody trying to harm them is a very easy place to go. yeah, that papa bear. and i also-- i mean, i havea lot of that samurai-ness


in myself, i guess because ireally don't express a lot just in my day to day life. i'm pretty even keeled. but i am i definitely haveanger about certain things, and it's always a challengeto kind of channel that. and in terms of apurely physical-- and in terms of the purelyphysical aspects, a lot of it is just stance. there's a way that you approachthe character physically,


even though you'rejust voicing it on the mic, when it comesto actually doing the fight sounds and the movements. i mean, you kind of act it out. and if you don't, it doesn'treally translate as well. there definitely isa lot of physicality that you have to impart in orderto really get yourself there vocally. and it's great to hear youtalk about that physicality


because you guys are notthe performance capture artists for these warriors. you are in a booth infront of a microphone when you do your performance,but that is a physical act and your body does sort--your body, your position, it all determines what yourvoice comes out sounding like. jennifer, you know,is that something you find that you sort ofget into a certain pose or you try toimitate-- all right,


this is what-- how aknight would stand. i'm very upright now. versus another character? it even comes down to howi dress for the session. like, i can't-- it'svery difficult to show up in a address forcharacters like this. like, it doesn't feel right. most of the time if i'm wearingshoes that aren't like this, i'll take them off.


i have had my feeton the ground. i stand when i record. over the years,i've trained myself, like, you have to keep yourmouth inside that sort of three inch box and you can't be--you know, so this part of me is tethered here,but the rest of me is like this around the outside. you know, like-- --because evensomething like-- for me,


i never realized ituntil a couple years ago. i was doing something, but whati do is i'll see the line here and i'll sort of insta-memorizeit mostly, and i come up and i'm actually, like--i see who i'm talking to. they're here, they'rethere, they're here. this is back there,that's over there, and i'm living that fora second because if i do, then you guys can. and yeah, so it doesn'thappen without the body.


it doesn't. that visualization is sokey, i think, because-- and i was just talking withchris about this last night. the performanceof a voice actor, you need-- you do needto account for the fact that you're playingthis character, but also the player isplaying the character. there's room for the playerto sort of align themselves with you, to step intoyour shoes a little bit.


how do you go about doingthat, and taking into account-- compared to some ofthe, say, tv show work or that you have done,any of you-- versus sort of when there's a playercharacter that you're voicing? you know, i don't think ofit that way because the person i'm playing doesn't. it's my job to fullydrop into this. it's interesting. you know, when i first starteddoing this a long time ago,


the visuals were different andthe acting style of what we did was different. but now it's evolved. there's a saying in on cameraacting, which is very true, which is that thoughtregisters on camera. and now, we've evolved toa point in this industry where thoughtregisters on the mic. so it's my job to jump in,fully inhabit it, and i-- like, before i start therecording process i


think about the players. that's all i think about--the creators and the players. i'm simply there toserve all you guys. but what i have to do to dothat is forget about all that and really live in what thewriter created as fully as i humanly can so that you can. i'm just a channel, really. you guys just getto climb in here, and let's all go fora ride, you know?


that's a very apt way tokind of talk about playing a video game, you know? it is-- the player doeschannel themselves into it. sarah, how does thatmanifest itself for you in terms of you'rein the booth, you're thinking of your character, butthere's also players involved that are future, and nebulous,and also every player is different? how does that impact your work?


i mean, i think it'sdifficult to sort of account for an unknown personkind of being in there with you and still befocused and present. so you kind of hopethat if your connection to the character and yourconnection to the game is true, and authentic,and precise that someone will be there with you. that they'll, again, likeswimming the channel with you, like jennifer says.


i think they're probably, like,maybe quirkier takes and, like, sort of stylistic flourishesthat you kind of have to shave off a little bitfor a player character. and that's when i reallytrust like chris and jason to be like, thatlaugh was way weird. we're not using that. we're going to dosomething else. but that's when i sortof offload it to them and sort of trustthem to do that.


'cause if i'm kindof, like, holding it in the back of my head, that'sa bit distracting maybe. so you just hope that ifyou're playing something that's real and that believablethat someone's there with you. as a director,chris, how do you make-- how do you makeroom for the player? how do you make room forthat in the performance-- make it a performance thatsort of stands by itself, but is also accessibleby a player?


i always think that what wedo, because it is interactive and everything thati've always done has been very interactiveplayer focused, i think of it as aninvitation, not a narration. so we're not necessarilytelling them what's happening, we're inviting them to sharewith us in this experience. come along with us. so we're partneringwith them in a really kind of deep emotional way, andwhen i'm directing the actors


i'm always thinking about whatthat player experience will be. and i guess it's interesting. i mean, it's sort of-- it'sdifficult to put into words, but it is also sort ofan energy thing, which sounds very like woo. but we're always thinkingabout, is that going to be real, is that going to bepowerful, is that going to be a significant moment--not because we're telling people what to feel, but becausewe're allowing them


the space to complete thatstory within themselves. there's anothet-- there'salso some alchemy that happens inside thishead that i don't think anyone really appreciates,which is just incredible to me. because we'll do like 30 takessometimes, and, you know, she'll pull out-- listeningto the differences, but i-- just a quickstory to illustrate what thing that chris brings. we're sitting there one timeand we're listening to takes,


and we're going along and she'slike listening and the actor does a take, doesa take, and chris goes-- she gets her facelike this and she goes, huh. and then it does again, andshe's like, something's weird. and then goes again andshe's like, wait hold on. we stop, and chrissays, there's a ticking. and the engineer goes overand he's like, no, no, no. i'm looking at the waveform. and she's like, nothere's a ticking.


i step back and i look. the engineer zoomsin on the sound. like, he's got thesound-- he's zooms it in to the silence part. zooms it until thesilence is going like this and it's like tick, tick, tick. and he's like, oh yeah. there's a tick there. and she's like, oh.


no one else will hear that. it's fine. go back to the actor, and i'mlike-- she just heard jupiter. that the tachyons we'repassing through the microphone. i'm like, whoa, right? so there's thisperformance aspect in all the emotionand the player. and then we're also,at the same time, doing this incrediblydifficult technical thing


to make-- it's amazing. it's impossible. and we're thinking, also,about every-- when one of them speaks a line, i'm hearingthe sound effects, the music, the other actors,the other performers. so i'm hearing that whole thing. so it's like seeing a lightin the window, a candle light in a darkenedwindow, but knowing every single room in the house.


you know, and that's my job. some say job, otherssay super power. i mean, tomatoand "toe-mah-toe." i'm very lucky. i want to get intoa little bit of sort of-- you got somevoice tracks laid down. how does this sort ofstart to come together? how does it start to connectto the performance capture, to the animation, to thesort of the character


as it manifests in the game? so we have this uniquechallenge with "for honor." all of our charactersare in armor. they're all wearingthis huge gear, and they all have helmets on. and so we can have someplaces where they take it off or whatever, butit's in almost all of the scenes wehave this thing. so we approached thestory of "for honor"


and the motion capture kindof using traditional animation styles. what we did is wemotion captured-- we got all these amazingmotion capture performers who are just expressivewith their body, who are going to say the lines,and then express themselves in ways that are going toread through the armor. and then we bring in theseincredible vo performers, these voice performers,who can just


pour emotion into the words. and we do that because that'show we get through the steel plate in front of theirface, because otherwise you won't understand theemotion inside the character and that's the whole goal. we want you to feel theway that the warden feels, and feel the way that theorochi feels, and the viking. so that was kind of thechallenge that we faced. and we're actually puttingall of those pieces


together and starting to seethe results, and some of it's pretty exciting stuff actually. so i'm kind of thrilled. we have an asset. we have something that we'regoing to show it's import here, but-- how many of you actually puton a helmet during the process? did they have anyfor you to try on? i know they had swords.


[laughter] they haven't figured outhow to mic inside the helmet. get a mic inside the helmet. yeah, that's an echo chamber. no, no. no dice. but yeah, that is a verypeculiar to "for honor" thing. i mean-- you know thekensei's mask only makes one facial expression.


so with the wardenknight, you don't even know what's goingon under there. that's right. so we've got somethingwith us if you want to take a lookat the example of what we're talking about, actually. so we've got anothercinematic to show you. this is from thesamurai campaign. this is later in the game,so this is josh's character.


this one is renderedin the engine, so it's still awork in progress. we're still finishing up thelighting and the effects, but it'll give you a betteridea of what the game actually looks like. the character of theorochi here has-- it's another-- we havea lot of boss fights. i don't know if that'ssurprising or not, but it's kind of whatwe're doing here.


so the orochi is defeatedon this great warlord, [inaudible], and we're atthe end of that sequence. and we're going to take alook at how that plays out. and so keep in mind-- oh,you'll see the assets. we've got-- there'sa big old placeholder texture in there, anyways. i always have theinstinct to apologize-- it's work in progress,it's a work in progress. it's great.


let's take a look at josh. [groaning] what are you waiting for? we need commander [inaudible]. you dishonor me. we need you. you are a great warrior. i won't serve beneath you. then slay me.


take my place. command our armies. have you gone mad? apollyon did this tous, not [inaudible]. i will not fight thelegion's war for them. ah! the emperor's champion. it's pretty cool. so, wait.


pretty cool. so which one was theplaceholder texture? i didn't see anything. it was actuallyvery, very subtle. so josh, that was a prettydramatic moment for you there. talk to us a little bit abouthow that scene came together. well basically, i actuallygot to see that when i was recording. so that helps a lot.


i mean, obviously if youcan actually see what the characters are doing andget a better sense of the space that they're-- that this wholething is taking place in, it helps a lot. and yeah, i mean this is apretty pivotal moment where-- i mean, how much can i say? so it's-- yeah. pretty pivotalmoment where they're forming kind of thisunconventional alliance,


and he's willing toobviously sacrifice himself for the end goal. and that's a prettyawesome thing to see. pretty powerful moment. and i have no doubt thatthe raider and the warden had similar moments like that. was there? so you sort of saw thatanimation, that asset for that time.


what other kind of visualaids, or actual physical swords that you might be holding,really helped you guys, sort of, maybe do certain scenesor throughout the process refine yourperformance, really get at the heart of your character? one of the other thingsthat we got a chance to see-- i don'tknow about you guys, 'cause i wasn't in theirsessions, but that i got to see was some of even the roughmocap where it was just


watching the mocap artistsin the suit with the balls and all that doing someof the fight scenes. and we actually gotto do adr, which is where you add inthe dialogue afterwards to a lot of these fight scenes. so we would be able towatch it, watch the action, and then chase it withthe fight with the sound. so when we would see thesword swings and the hits and everything, we'd be ableto actually go through and add


the sounds to that as the fightwas happening in real time. and i mean, you getto really just see a sense of the physicalityright there in front of you. not to mention, i've watcheda ton of samurai movies and i've got that todraw from as well. so whether we're seeing it infront of us in a rough form, or whether it comes from ourown mental canon of what we've already seen from thistype of character, that's all preparationthat goes into that.


the mocap stuff was so, sopowerful because these mocap actors are goingfull tilt. i mean, they're-- like for the vikings,i mean, they're all in these-- they're hyped andthey're vocalizing, and they're givingyou so much energy. so for me to thencome on top of that and yell a bit, or whatever,like, they're giving me so much that it's like-- it makes itreally easy to kind of give back.


it's really helpful. really, really helpful. it's awesome. it really is a lot of that. it's jumping on the train. there's so much available to us. these guys havedone a brilliant job of providing context, anddetails, and specificity, and it's through thosethat the mocap, you know,


stuff that we gotto watch-- and some of the stuff that was alreadypulled together-- and then just the collaborative nature of,like, they throw us the ball and then we'll take the balland then they'll add more. it's just like thisjust back and forth that builds on itself. that's very cool. chris, this seeingthe mocap, sort of watching the scenes-- "forhonor" is a very physical game.


it's a very-- these arevery physical roles. what kind of preparationand direction did you sort ofcustomize to suit that? how was this productiondifferent than other sort of games you've worked on? i think that havingthe bodies of the motion capture actors-- wellone, having jason there with us-- because hedirected the mocap and was there the wholetime, and because we


both are willing to bevery excited in the booth. so we both are, like, jumping upand down and, like, kill, kill, kill. you know, and it'sreally-- it creates. but having jason-- jason isso free with his expression in a way that frees me, andthen frees the performers. and it creates a placewhere you can do no wrong. and so-- you'll see that inthe motion capture footage as well where it's thespirit-- where we're all


willing to give asmuch as we possibly can because it's anon-competitive environment. it's an environment and we'reall catching each other. that's the thingabout this project that i find to beso special for me is that it's like abunch of trapeze artists, and you're invitedon to the trapeze and you're, like oh snacks. i'm going to fall.


but then someone has you. and it's just amazing, and we'reconstantly catching each other and generating this energy thatcreates these real moments-- these true moments--that then-- it's why our mocap and ourvoice go together, and there's no disconnect. it just goes click,and it's incredible. and i think itstarts with our guy. aw.


to hear you talk aboutthat kind of that bond, that camaraderie-- youknow, to see josh's scene in which adversaries sort ofbond together "for honor," at its face, feels likean adversarial game. i mean, it's combat. it is one on one. it's-- however itis, it's melee. it's up close and it'sconflict, but jason-- out of that conflict andwithin that conflict there,


there's a bond there. there's a closenessthere that you also channel to conjurethese other emotions. i think what you're talkingto is one of-- i think that's the heart of the game. there's this amazing truthabout being a warrior, and just fighting in general,is that if you and i go-- if we get up hereand we're like, let's fight and we roll aroundon the ground and we're like--


[babbling] --when we stand back up, i'mgoing to know you a lot better and you're going to know. yeah, let's try it. let's go. are you ready to-- we've got money matcheshappening later here, so. sweet. so i mean-- and you seethis in sports, too.


like in sports whenyou're on a sports team and you're going as hard asyou can against the other team, you get done and you're like,i know each one of those people that i came into contact with. you know who they are. so i mean, there's this--fighting and conflict and this combat in a safeenvironment of video games, it just generates empathy. it just creates it.


you end up-- and you feelthis in the multiplayer side, too, where you start tofight people and you're like, i know that person. and here, we wanted to dothat with our characters. i get to know thesecharacters, and these bosses, and these enemiesthat i'm fighting and i get to know who they are. not just through their sounds,most just through their story, but how they fightand kind of what


you went through when you weredueling or wrestling with them. it's the heart of the game. and kind of the heartof the-- i don't know, what y'all went through tosort of bring together this-- all your performances. and chris, for you to sortof collate them together. and your image of thehouse with the one light on is so evocative of kind ofhow you have to bring together all these pieces.


my question for you is sortof-- throughout the production of "for honor," whatwas-- i don't know. it's a unique game. it's distinct. we've talked aboutsome of the ways that it is differentfrom other projects. what was somethingthat was special to you about working with theseactors, and on the nature of this project given itsheart, its focus, and what kind


of game it is? well i think that thereis an incredible nobility in the warriorspirit, and i think that with all of theseactors-- also travis, liam, and our whole cast--it comes-- the people that we-- being invited byjason to be a part of this game, and then being allowed toinvite the people that i trust, and love, and know i feelvery personal connections with my act-- like,i say my-- i mean,


they're everyone's actors. it's that thing where youcreate in the warrior spirit. you create this bond andthis unity of purpose. i mean, it sounds as thoughwe keep saying the same thing, but it's a verysimple thing that just permeates every momentof not only creating the game, but playing the game. it's respect foryour fellow fighters, because it takes incrediblecourage to be vulnerable enough


to let someone see your fightbecause you are 100% putting yourself out there,and that's what i love about the multiplayer. it's what i love aboutplaying with other people. i mean, always, right? with all the things--you're playing "gears" you're playing "league," andyou have them and you're like, i know you and we'regoing to band together. we're going to go do this thing.


or you killed me,i'm coming for you. but then you know one anotherand it's amazing, yeah. to hear you say theword vulnerability with the cast of charactersthat "for honor" has, maybe it's not the mostnatural fit at first glance. but it totally fits. it totally does. you there is that--like jason was saying-- that honesty,that connection,


of that melee contact. it is. it's a purity. and when you'refighting-- i mean, when we think aboutthe samurai, or when we think about thewarrior-- you know, the warrior andthe warden, it is-- you know exactly who youare and what you're doing. it's like being at the top ofthe double black diamond ski


run, and you're going to go. and if you doubt fora second, that's it. you're done. you know what i mean? and you need that let go. you have to justbreathe and surf it because otherwise-- yeah if itgets you stuck in your head, it's over. i can't stay up there.


sarah, you have talked-- wetalked about your experience playing the game. you know, it is a game thathas a very distinct feel. we've sort of touchedon it a little bit tonight, but talkto me about what it was like to-- havingbeen through the process of recording your performance,embodying this character-- to then pick up thatcontroller, and play, and feel that connection.


well i got to play jen,which was super, super fun. yeah, so i played thedemo and then i was like, oh it's jennifer. i was like so excited. so she felt-- i mean,the character, i think, will feel different than when iget to play a viking, but yeah. but it had this heavinessand this fluidity to it, and jen's just boss. just like absolute-- there'slike a dryness and a certainty


to her badasserythat, like, i just will spend years tryingto summon in myself. but yeah, so like just get--but putting hands on it, and feeling this likecontinuity of input that, like, my inputjust moves-- it's not like push, push, thing, thing. it's just this, like, connectionto the character model that has a weightand just, i don't know, a purity ofthat connection that


was really gratifying. and it's beautiful. it's so pretty. i was just-- i was sittingthere just like googly-eyed for five minutes. and it took me like the wholedemo to get decent with it, but by the end-- where's jeff? jeff knows. jeff will attest thati, like, kind of got ok


by the end of it, and it wasstarting to feel really, really intuitive. like intuitive ina way that it felt like actual bodily interactionmore so than like learning to map some buttons. so it was really exciting. it's a prettyunique experience, and i totally resonate with you. you sort of start to, asyou're moving the stick,


you start to kind of moveyourself a little bit. you feel that. not to the extent of, like, i'min a 90s tv ad for video games, but you do feelthat physicality. and that was something youtalked about earlier in terms of your performancesand how it all sort of connects to that root. josh, in terms of coming outthe other end of this project, looking back on it as, youknow, your role as the orochi


samurai, what was somethingthat was, i don't know, like a highlightfor you in terms of what made thisproject special or what-- what you got to doand connect with on "for honor?" well i haven't gottento play the game, so i'm really lookingforward to it. vandenberghe, come on. you got to hook this man up. no, i gotta play it.


i'm a huge gamer, and i've likedmelee games my entire gaming life, career, whatever. and i actually like thatthis is kind of like a team based multiplayer. almost like ashooter, but melee. like, that-- that's somethingthat's awesome to me that i can't waitto actually play. i think the biggestreward in this is actually being ableto get to play this


and knowing thati was a part of. and i think, jason, you weretelling me a little bit about-- that was my bad. josh's enthusiasm, though,for sort of the mechanics, and kind of that process,and what it actually feels like to play the game. it was amazing to seejosh's commitment. i mean, it's-- we playedthe samurai campaign last, and so josh's character isright up there to the end.


and his just utter dedicationand hurled himself-- i wish i could show you guyssome of the stuff that here, but it all kind ofhappens at the end. and i mean, we're sittingthere in the booth and, i mean, chris and i arewatching like, holy shit. he's really throwinghimself-- it was amazing. so, super great. jennifer, sort of your--on "for honor," this is a different kind of game thanthe many games you've voiced.


what was somethingthat you'll take away from this as sort of ahighlight, a special memory? working with theseguys, honest to god. there's this really-- some--all games are awesome, honestly, but every now and then, there'sone where the energies goes to this whole other leveland there's this sort of, i don't, common mission. you know? and it elevates theroom, it elevates


the game- just thewhole thing hits this incredibly special level. that and the swords. well it has been anabsolute pleasure to sit here and chatwith you folks here. to dig deep into "for honor" andthe creative process, what you all brought to the game. we're going to go herefor some cheering, folks, but i want to gofaction by faction.
