[ noise ] >> this is our second[background noise] annual day of dance. we had it last year andthen this year again. and so we're just sopleased about the turn out.
Yoga Studio Los Gatos, we have over a thousand people that registered fortoday's event. so day of dance is all about educating womenabout heart health.
so heart disease is thenumber one killer of women. it actually-- for all thecancers combined, more women die from heart disease andnow, more women and men die from heart disease andthat happens just a couple of years ago. so today, it's all about gettingup and working out your heart by dancing and then wealso have 8 different heart health screening. so it's glucose, cholesterol,heart rate, blood pressure,
we also have vein screeningand [inaudible] screening and these are all freescreenings for the community. >> i worked in thehealth field for 21 years. when i took care of my mother,i let my own screenings go down. i kept my health up and i feel that this vitallyimportant to me. >> it's been great. the dance is really fun. we did exercise and someother things, and so now,
i'm here for the screening,and it was really easy and all the peopleare great here. >> women aren't just familiarwith what their scores are for all of thesedifferent factors that really are importantfor their heart health. we also just in recent researchhave found that over 50 percent of the women don't knowthe signs and symptoms of a heart attackwhich are different from women than from men.
so we need to make sure thatwomen are aware of it and also over 50 percent of thewomen would not call 911 if they were experiencingsymptoms of a heart attack. so we also have lecturesgoing on too as well to provide people information. we have over a 150 volunteersfrom all different walks of life including tennesseestate indians and some of the nursing students there. we have over 25 ofour physicians both
in the cardiologyconsult group as well as we also have anask a doc booth for general healthquestions that women can ask. >> so one of my jointreplacement patients will come in and say, "can i move? should i be afraidto take my walk or to dance or to be active?" and my answer alwaysis "please, be active. no matter what you need,
if you eventually willneed a joint replacement, your recovery will be quicker. the more flexible youare, the stronger you are, the lighter you are and theday of dance is a great way to get that muscles across." and then we have 8different performing groups that are during different dancestoday throughout the afternoon. >> well, i was part ofthe first year and it was such a wonderful timebecause first of all,
you get all these exercise. you learn to do dances andyou, you know, let you hear about bollywood dancing. but now you can see it andnow you can actually do it. i think that encourages somepeople to take exercise classes of dances, and flamencois going to be here today. i think that's fantastic. the other thing is all thefree health screenings, talking to doctors,the lectures,
the prizes, it's just wonderful. and now the second year, i mean,even more people i noticed. and one of the things thatwas so funny is this year when i was announcing,people would e-mail, "jonnie, that wasn't funny. how much is it really?" and i said, "it's free." then they get, "no, no, no. i said how much is it forthe health screening?"
"free," and they said, "why?" and i said, "becausethey are hospital. they care about people's health. they really do careand they know that testing is aboutprevention." [ music ] >> i've never seen more peoplein a situation where they come, they're enthusiastic, theywant to dance the whole day. it's pure fun, hearthealthy, healthy in general,
learning about their healthand gathering more information. it's a wonderful event. >> we're here today totake part in the dancing. we're going to have realaffection [inaudible remark] >> yeah. >> what's your dance? >> it's cardio danceso it's just dance from all different genres,different music, popular music. >> the focus of today is toget people to become aware
of their own personal riskand how they can take charge of these risk factors by theirchoices in diet, their choices in exercise, weight management,stress management and so forth. >> started getting a littlenumb, nauseous, cold flashes, total, total restlessness andcoworkers called paramedics. but all the signs were theremore than 48 hours for that. my message is getyourself screened. take care of yourself and don'ttake those signs for granted. [ silence ]
