>> to help you become "bike people." >> hello to all of my cycling friends out there. thank you for tuning into "bike last week, we went to ragbrai and looked at how it changed, and we learned about the charter service and started a ride in
sioux center, and stopped in with some really cool riders. >> this week, we're going to follow more people from the charter service, show you what happens if you have a repair need while riding on ragbrai, and also show how to change your flat fire if you have one.
>> let's pick up in the first overnight town in the town of cherokee. >> we're here in downtown you can see all of the vendors are in one area and people all around are coming down to see what the excitement a all about. >> it's like 95degrees.
>> it's warm for everybody and so beautiful to look around and the nicely painted buildings. there's nicely painted girls here too. that's unique. we were busy that night. we worked until way past dark getting all of the bikes
repaired, getting everybody ready to go for the next day. >> i understand you brought your bike in. what happened? >> well, i got a flat earlier today and then we replaced it with a fuse and then started riding again and apparently my
tire is pinching it. so got another flat. >> you made it back all right? >> no. actually we had to get-- we had to get picked up, brought here, to get a new tire and a new-- >> okay. they're going to get you set and
ready for tomorrow and it's not going to happen, i guess. >> how many times have you been on ragbrai. >> this is my second time. >> are you enjoying it. >> i am. >> good for the-- >> yeah, it was a great day.
everyone is really friendly and helpful and nice. hilarious. >> where are you from. >> omaha. >> awesome. what kind of trails do you have in omaha? >> we really only have like--
we have a trail in council bluffs and then the river, which is everybody rides. it's flat. >> is that pace or -- >> pace. >> very good. >> all throughout omaha. >> good luck out there.
hope it all works out. >> thank you. >> here we go. >> i just rode-- >> that was like, what, 17. >> yeah. that was the longest part of our day. >> it was fun.
when i got down to the bottom of this hill, my tire blew. so luckily-- >> did that scare you? was it loud? >> my bike didn't shake or anything like that, so-- >> this scares me. >> okay, forest, tell me the
steps to fix a flat tire. >> well, the wheel already off the bike. we will take the balance cap off, we will release any extra air that might possibly be in there. we will take the tire lever that is going to be inside of our
road ready repair kit that is on the seat pack behind your seat. we will start opposite of valve stem. take the tire valve and put it between the rim and work the first half of the tire off and around. at that point in time inserting
the valve, and we will reach in, grab the inner tube, pull it out, and i lock it to keep it in alignment with the tire so when i figure out where the flat tire occurred i can figure that problem out also. i take the air pump and put pressure in it, figure out where
the flat occurred, find the tack or whatever and remove that. then take the new tube. put the valve stem into the rim, working it symmetrically around so i put it inside the tire. then i will be installing the tire on the rim with the valve stem working symmetrically
around playing up with the other side. at that point there time i want to make sure the tube is not pinched between the rim and the tire. take the inflation device, inflate it to the proper pressure which is on the side of
the tire and i'm ready to go for a ride. >> very quick, very fast. >> good morning, cherokee. there i am riding out of the campground. i tell you what, they did such an amazing job directing traffic and getting me out on the road
and going. >> well, everybody sure was chipper and ready to go. i bet they have already had their first breakfast of the >> i'm sure they have. bowling, how about a rematch. i won't let you win this time. >> i would love to.
i love to win. >> here we are rolling into hanover, about 20miles from >> that's what is wonderful about riding, you're able to see a lot of nice rural parts of the iowa. >> it reminds me so much of growing up on a farm.
>> it's that's what people would love to showcase. >> and let's not forget, banjo man, if you ever go on rag ride you will probably meet this gentleman. plays lots of music about riding his bike. >> banjo man, most of his songs
are about riding. >> now this is an actual helmet you wear on your bike too? this is a very old fire helmet, of all things i went to a swap meat and bought car parts. i used to be a mechanic. i was going through the box and found this.
i got this about the time i started as a volunteer. i had this for a while. this is the first ragbrai i busted it out, and i said, i have a union jersey. i will wear tomorrow, so i have to wear the helmet with it. >> you are wearing that on your
bike today. >> yes. >> you have to get a lot of bell ringing and "awesome hats!" >> i got a few so far. >> so all of the money goes to help you-- yeah, all of the proceeds will go. >> so you're sure-- you're
making all of that on my concession. >> you have the hamburgers and broth. we don't have pie. >> we don't have pie. >> we thought about it but there's a little-- it's going to be a riot.
>> well, there's a little bit of a problem. come august we solicit pies for our festival. >> and we didn't want to wear out our welcome. so this is a real canadian here, apparently not everyone with a canadian or maple leaf shirt is
canadian. >> not halls. >> i'm looking for a rhubarb pie. >> just rhubarb or-- >> we have to go rhubarb. the boss wants rhubarb. and these awesome jerseys. what is it up.
>> our team leader is sam out of iowa and he-- that's checker and his wife is a teacher and that's the other check. >> oh!. >> one of the best things about the ride is there's so much support, i know if something happens to my bike there's
always going to be someone there to help me. >> there are iowa stores that follow along where the cyclists are never far away from a qualified mechanic. >> what kind of repair do we have here. >> here tom is actually
replacing the cable and the housing to make the shifting work properly. >> she is going to be one happy camper when she is back on her bike. how long does something like this take. >> repair like this would take
between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on what else happens. the mechanic will check it bike over top to bottom to make sure they're safe and ready to go, fully adjusted. >> peace of mind i'm sure. >> hey, you guys will be super busy.
i'm suzet by the way. >> tom. >> tom, nice to meet you. i understand you're the guy to know. >> so they say. i don't know. >> fixing flats and what else might happen out here on the
road. >> we do a lot of different repairs, mostly shifting and replaces, flat fixes. sometimes we replace cranks and that kind of thing, wheels, a lot of replacements. >> what is the base evidentiary pair you have done.
>> the front end repair. >> during ragbrai? >> what happened? >> they ran into a bridge. >> exactly. more common with a garage. people leave their bikes on the roof and they will run them in the garage.
>> what is the most common thing you're doing today. >> spoke replaces, fix and add just, that kind of thing. >> do you get a break? >> we work probably 6:00 to 12:00 or sometimes 2:00, just until they come through. >> well, good luck.
i hope that you, you know, save somebody's life today. >> i don't want to save anybody's life. i will save their ride but not their life. >> good to meet you. >> good to meet you too. >> what's your story?
i happen to be the director of ragbrai and one of my jobs is to keep people moving along, safe, and make sure they're having a good time. >> how do you get to be the director of ragbrai. >> went to school for management but i was lucky enough to come
up and ride ragbrai when i was in florida and i run an outfit called bike florida down there and i learned about ragbrai, and i was good friends with jim green who had my job before and jim convinced me and my family that it was as good endeavor could come up.
>> how many years have you done this now? >> 10 years. >> what does ragbrai mean? >> it's the great ride across iowa so it's all in the name. we started off with no name, then it was the second annual, and then by ragbrai 3, if you
will-- people need to know this, the history of that. >> john called and started it, to ride their bikes across the state and say hey, come join us. and what they were trying accomplish is the visit with the people of iowa, so when we're here at hanover village,
proposition probably three. >> it is actually. >> to receive the people here working in the machine shop or just some of the great places in iowa that you would have to get off the beaten path to see. if you stay on the interstate 80, you will--
>> we said we would write about the people of iowa and what we're doing is bringing 10, 20,000 of our closest friends to visit with the people and visit with these people. >> i never hear anyone disappointed. you're doing a great job.
>> thank you for your work. >> i also met the coolest band. they hall all equipment on two trailers, solar powered of course. >> it looked like they had a hundred pounds of equipment on the trailers and they were big heavy trailers.
out racing you see all kinds of trailers hauling all kinds of stuff. >> that's a good example. >> there's a the lot of people ready to head out to lakeview. how far is it? >> only 40 more miles. >> let's get some lunch
beforehand. >> here in lakeview, there is the stock trail. >> look out, forrest, here i come. >> why? only if i can find you. >> i found pie. >> a rhubarb pie?

>> we have myself and another woman, joyce, and we have a shaded squared which is awesome. it's always our hub for events and things going on. people love to hang out. as we're planning we're like let's get couches up there. we need somewhere pour people to
sit. we collected for different people around town. we had people hanging out, a lot of locals came up, we had groups that sleep on them last night. >> you may need to get couches all the time. >> i was thinking about that.

what brought you to ragbrai? i realize it's awesome. >> there are only so many that are going to come for us. >> did you have any peanut butter and banana sandwiches on the road yet. >> i tried. unfortunately.

>> i'm riding my dad's trek. and mine is a borrowed bike. >> this is the only time that you use this? >> i bike all the time. >> he does ironman stuff. >> oh. >> but i literally bike once a year.

me to cook. >> oh, it's fun. i love it. >> rhubarb pie. if we had rhubarb pie-- >> worst day i can remember on ragbrai was the one they called saggy thursday. half the ragbrai sagged.
they were nagging the farmers and anyone in town to come out with pickup trucks and pick people up because it was 30, 35miles per hour head winds and it was over a hundred degrees. and there were hills. and it was to the point where you were actually peddling
downhill. >> wow. >> it's the only time on ragbrai, in the middle of nowhere-- usually you pull off in the middle of town-- but middle of nowhere and there was a barn. all i can describe it like 250
pullups and you just can't do the last one. i just could not pedal anymore. and i went mine the barn and just laid down. and when i woke up, there were hogs all around. i was so exhausted. >> oh, my gosh.
>> i mean i was really tired. >> i remember the car, like when it hits, it would flash up. i came into camp with tar all over my tires. >> did you finish it. >> yeah, i finished it. >> if you finished it, did you get a t shirt that said i
survived? >> it said saggy thursday. just saggy thursday. probably anybody can buy the t-shirt but it really means something to the ones that did complete that day. that saggy thursday happened and people don't realize that this
is kind of extraordinary this year because we're in a drought in the whole midwest and it is dry and hot. but i can tell you there's rigs on ragbrai i have been freezing to death, even in my tend and i couldn't stay warm so it can't be the honest.
>> it has been good so far. >> how many ragbrais have you done. >> 25 complete. technically 26. >> my i ask how old you are? >> 81. >> 81? >> you are putting a lot of
these young folks to shame, you know that? you do know that. >> i had three-- >> you mean this year. >> why do you keep doing this. >> i love it. and i don't have anything else to do.
>> so i understand that you set up your own tent. and bike world can do that for you-- over from. >> have you ever sagged. >> never. >> i might this year. i hope to.
>> you will. i know you will. >> it's day four lunch stop at forest city and i'm going to ride a pony. >> this week i experienced what it was like to ride ragbrai and learned about a cool festival in hanover.
go ahead and say it. you have been dying to. >> i got pie. but i have to say we're in a slight pie deficit still. only one piece of pie and it's hard to share with friends with just one piece of pie. >> i noticed you didn't share
but you plan to share if you get more. >> certainly i would love to share with my friends if i had a bigger piece or a full pie. >> we have loose ends, come back next week and we will talk to those who finished what it takes to put ragbrai together.

i took all day for me, paddling against the wind and at least on a bicycle when it is windy you can get off the thing. but in a canoe you can't. especially when all of the white caps are moving at you and a hundred thousand acres of fire. yeah.
and so what happened it was i finally got to another camp side and lo and behold, i pitch a tent and guess what is there? mama bear and three cubs. i spent the next few days with mama bare and i said i don't have any food left, you took it all and the toothpaste and
toothbrush are gone. and i can visualize the whole thing with mother bear walking off with all of my food and saying to the kids, we're off on a teddy bear picnic. don't forget to floss your teeth! and then one morning or one day
i smelled this horrible stench, if i thought i know i stink but that's not my smell. i opened the flap-- i had to keep it closed because i had snow, rain, and everything else and the smoke from the flyer. and i opened my-- i any the second born because it was like
my. it was like home alone and i started banging on my pot which i didn't need anymore, no food, and i said, i know i'm supposed to tell you you're cute but you're not cute, get the hell out of here. and i go outside and i have my
parcel of rocks and the mama bear and other two cubs are up from singing. i concerned about starving but i was concern, if they knocked down that, i would freeze because of hypothermia. >> you wouldn't be afraid they would eat you?
