this is the community analysis presentation of winter garden, florida. presented by: beena jaimangal-pirmal the objective of this presentation is to look at the historical overview, community structure, population analysis, health analysis and resources, environmental analysis, government/public policy analysis, public safety, community concerns, and global community issue. the winter garden area was first settled by w.c. roper and family in 1857. this family relocated from georgia and purchased 600 acres of land.
Yoga Windermere Fl, w.c. roper built multiple mills on the land, such as: grain, flour, saw and sugar mills. other families soon followed and settled the land, creating a town. approximately 50 years post the first settlement, the region was incorporated in 1908 as the city of winter garden. throughout most of the 1900’s, winter garden, like most areas of the state of florida, relied on crop production. the regions soil was very productive especially in relation to oranges.
in 2003, the 1935 built garden theater was renovated and has since been used to host an array of performances. in 2008, the new city hall building was completed. in the same year, the city purchased a 200 acres ranch to create a park with water access to johns lake, trails and camping. investing in the city to encourage tourism and families to make their homes within the small city were made. many of the city's main events occur in the historic district. annual food and wine events and art and music festivals are just a few of the activities available. every saturday, many of the areas locals from winter garden and neighboring cities visit and enjoy the farmer's market. patrons have the opportunity to purchase fresh, organic, locally produced fruits, vegetables, honey, etc. every second weekend of the month, a classic car show brings many visitors to the city.
these family friendly events, hosted by the city help support the area's small local businesses as cafes, restaurants and bars are kept busy during these events. the winter garden heritage foundation runs two museums within the city. the heritage museum stores a vast collection of more than 5,000 relics that pertain to the history of winter garden. the railroad museum displays historical pieces that presents the impact the railway has had on the development of florida. winter garden is the home of fowler’s grove shopping center, the popular twenty-two mile west orange trail, a new florida hospital location, as well as a highly desired school district. as well, this small city is conveniently located 20-30 minutes from downtown orlando and central florida’s major theme parks such as: disney world, universal studios, and seaworld. housing within the city are fundamentally residential dwelling types which include few condominiums and townhouses. however, 60% are single family homes. the average cost of a home in the area is $218,000. 50% of all homes were built between the years of 2000 and 2005. as of 2010, almost 69% of homes in the area are owner occupied and 30% renter occupied. this leaves a 1% vacancy rate.
homes are normally well cared for and lawns manicured. roadways are found to be clean and without need of repair. winter garden has one library located in the heart of the city. this ideal location serves many income levels. many programs are offered at this location, such as: reading time for toddlers, and educational resources such as: classes on computer, internet, and popular software use. computers and internet service is available free of charge. due to budget limitations, the library is no longer opened on sundays. however, the ocoee library, approximately four miles away, is available. transportation may be a factor to some patrons.
educational services provided to local children are: public, private, charter or homeschooling. dillard street, maxey, tildenville, and lake whitney are the main public elementary schools that serve the area. public bus services are available for eligible students that live beyond a two mile radius of the school. children living within two miles from school must use alternate transportation such as: private car, walking or bicycling. hope charter and legacy high school are sister charter schools available in the city. this school provides education from grades k through 12. the local charter school do not have zoning restrictions as applications and waiting lists are necessary for placement. foundation and cranium academy are available for families that seek a private school experience. for both charter and private schools, public bus services are not available to students.
home schooling is available through orange county and flvs. most classes are online. a ymca is conveniently located in the city. programs focus on health and wellness. fitness programs include yoga, zumba, swimming, tennis, and more. fees depend on membership type, family size, and income. the population of this quaint and charming town is 40,356 according to the 2015 us census for winter garden. this is compared to the orange county population of 1,288,126, per 2015 us census. the population density is approximately 15.41 people per square mile and only approximately 1.5% of a seasonal fluctuation. approximately 30% of the current population is between the ages of 25-44. it is estimated that 70% of the city is caucasian.
over 96% of the city residents are actively employed which is above the state employment rate. the income levels of the residents of city of winter garden are over 30% middle income and almost 50% upper-middle and higher income. the poverty rate is approximately 10%, which is substantially lower that the county at 37% and florida state at 22%. the low poverty rate and middle to high income levels are likely linked to the educational levels of winter garden residents of 25 years and older. it is estimated that almost 50% of residents have achieved a college education and/or graduate level of study. florida department of health reported in 2014 that the most common communicable disease within the state is chlamydia, then gonorrhea, followed by syphilis. the leading causes of death within orange county is heart disease and cancer tied at 22.8% followed by stroke at 6.5%. the florida hospital of winter garden opened their doors in 2016. this facility services mainly the residents of winter garden and windermere. this facility can treat acute needs and make referrals to outpatient facilities as needed.
centra care of winter garden is a walk-in clinic that is operated under the faith based florida hospital. the winter garden centra care is open 7 days per week typically open from 8am-8pm. shepard’s hope is a faith based organization run by healthcare professionals whom volunteer their services at two locations in the neighboring city of ocoee. shepard’s hope provide health care services to individuals lacking in insurance. serenades is an assisted living facility that also includes a locked memory care unit for dementia patients. rooms pricing varies upon location and room type. both private and semi-private room are available. health central park is a nursing-rehabilitation facility that is owned and operated by orlando health. this facility is a 5 star rated nursing facility. nursing care is available 24/7- 7 days per week. the healthy people 2020 objective is based on the 2014 record that nearly 2,300 automobile related deaths of teenagers took place between the age 16-19 in the united states. the goal is to promote education and behaviors to preserve life and safety among these drivers. as well, currently, it is not mandatory for motorcyclist to wear helmets in most states, including florida.
healthy people 2020 is directing efforts to encourage the use of helmet use among motorcyclists. currently 67% of motorcyclists wear helmets. the 2020 goal is for that number to increase by 10%. obesity is another great concern. it is reported by the florida department of health that over 65% of florida residents are overweight leading to increased risk of development of diabetes, heart disease, stroke etc. the healthy people 2020 objective: d-16.2: focuses on encouraging weight lose behaviors and risk reduction related to the development of associated illnesses, primarily diabetes. heart disease & stroke hds- 20.1: the goal is to educate and assist in the management of ldl levels of individuals ages 20 and above. it has been estimated that 52.3% of adults aged 20 years and over possess ldl levels outside of the recommended range, therefore increasing their risk for heart attack or stroke. the city of winter garden water division is held accountable for ensuring that the water that residents consume are safe and potable. the region is supplied by the floridian aquifer. the water is regulated by both federal and state laws. solid waste is picked up by the public services department two times per week. one time per week includes recyclables and yard waste. trash receptacles are provided to residents of the city, by the city.

communities in which obesity is of the greatest concern, nurses provide the “motivation interview.†the goal is to understand how both the individual and community view the environment and self. understanding this, the nurse can aid the patient to develop the motivation, education and behavioral patterns to succeed in weight loss. as public health nurses, education, support, and motivation can be provided to both individual patients and their communities.
